Same item different cost issue

I own a retail store.

We have basic items that are restocked throughout the year.

Each time the items come in, my cost is different.

If I still have the older stock on the shelf I am having to create an entirely new item because the cost is different.

Why doesn't square spread the cost (average it) between the existing old and new items.

For instance:

If I buy item 123 for $1.00 in June and I am running low in July, I reorder but my cost is now $1.50. Price remains the same but my cost does not.

It would be great if I could add the new inventory to the old and have the cost evenly averaged.

I have been calculating it myself however, this is extremely time consuming. It is also creating a headache in that I have multiple listings for the same exact item.

We have this happen all the time as our goods are priced sorta like a commodity. We just keep one listing and adjust the price. The problem is there is no place within square that isn't viewable to the customer that we can store the historical record of price fluctuations and what we are doing

I think what would be helpful if there would be a an open notes field in each retail item so this historical data can be logged into the item so you have that information and can know how the price changed over time. However the math you described you can easily do yourself and adjust the price for your entire inventory of said items.

So for example if you have 50 pencils at $1 cost each and 50 pencils at $2 each the average is $1.50 and you would make all 100 pencils that price.

Dina,

Thank you. Glad to see you are having a similar issue.

I have been doing the math myself UGH.... it would be much easier if square would average the cost when entering the newer inventory into a PO. It would save time. As business owners, we need to save every minute we can.

Your suggestions are great too. Hopefully they make the modifications we are requesting.

I saw another thread from 2017 regarding the same issue I am having. Yet, it still hasn't been addressed. Fingers crossed it happens soon.

Thanks for the advice.
