So right now I can have up to 6 sales tax items per invoice. I'd really like to have one sales tax line per invoice totaling the 6 and still get the proper sales tax reporting. I'm guessing that's not possible?
@rhuberty Well, the TN sales and use tax manual is 350 pages. The number of different taxes and the way the taxes apply from state to state pretty much requires that taxes are itemized. For example, you buy something in Virginia and come to TN and it is an expensive item...you deduct the VA sales tax and still owe use tax in TN. Federal versus state, excise versus duties, etc etc etc. I understand the idea, but for customers, they might be able to deduct some taxes, and not others. I am sure it could be possible, but it might not be legal or best practice.
I get the fact that sales tax compliance is complicated and that's why you see solutions like Avalara and others that fully automate the calculation, reporting, and remittance process. For many years I sold high-end ERP solutions that allow this option. Many of the invoices I receive today from fairly large companies show a single line. This should be an option.
