New verses Returning

How does the system know if they are new or returning if customer pays with cash?  I feel my numbers are incorrect.

Hi @RustyTreasures.  As you probably suspected already, cash sales are not included in the new vs. returning customer report.  That being said, they can be if you attach a customer to every transaction on your POS, or add a new customer if that is the case.  If you don’t do this, Square can’t possibly know whether a cash customer is new or returning.

In my shop, we just don’t worry about cash sales.  They are less than 20% of our business, and the other 80% gives us a good enough metric that we can rely upon.  We thought about doing what I mentioned above, once, but decided against it because it would cause customers unnecessary pain and slow down the checkout process.  Actually once we implemented a loyalty program, that helped a lot since loyalty customer want to earn their points, so they give us their phone numbers when they order.  So it’s a win-win!
