MA tax charged while in NY

I'm based in MA. Therefore, I have MA tax on all items. I'm in NY at a conference and customers are being charged MA tax. What the hell?!

You have to manually set up what taxes are collected, Square cannot do that automatically, even though they know where you're performing your sales.  To set up taxes, navigate from your PC's Dashboard > Items > Taxes.  Create and edit taxes here as necessary.  Then you'll need to set each tax for the items for which they apply.

Thanks. I also heard back from support that part of the confusion was because online sales work slightly differently than in-person sales. I noticed online sales out of state correctly not applying the MA tax I set up, and assumed location services would know I wasn’t in MA, therefore not apply the tax also. Guess not.

It would be nice if it worked that way, maybe sometime in the future.

@lancep

That is the unfortunate reality here. Location services just confirms you are taking payments in the country you have established your account in, it does not relate to the taxing district in which you are taking payments.

As a former business owner, and knowing this is something that St. Louis (where my businesses have been based), has so many municipal taxing districts, this is even a feature that would have greatly benefitted my business.

Definitely something we'll continue to track as a feature request.
