Items disappear on kds when ticket is split

We are a counter service restaurant and will ring in an order all together so that guests food will come out together. Once the ticket has been sent to the kitchen we will reopen it and separate the items so that guests can pay separately, everything but the first check is then disappearing of the ads display so only half the order is getting made. Any idea how to avoid this other than not splitting checks?
