Issues with Chipped Cards when using Contactless + Chip Reader

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: "Chip Cards, NOT Contactless Chip Cards"

I've been using the square (about 3.5") reader for years w/o a problem. Love it. Last week, it wouldn't take chip cards. It kept asking me to use my phone, but these were NOT contactless chip cards. It happened each time I tried and finally resorted to keying in the numbers on the back of the card so I wouldn't lose the sale. Please HELP! Do I need a new or different kind of reader?

Hi ArtOfAloha,

Sometimes strange issues pop up - although the Community is NOT Tech Support, it's quite possible your reader has issues.   You may want to consider contacting Tech Support Direct via your Account Dashboard for assistance (best option).   Depending on the age of your reader, Square may replace it as per the warranty, else you may want to consider a replacement.  From experience, I don't think you need a different kind of reader, maybe just a new one - but that is only my guess.  Perhaps others here have some different thoughts.

Hi @ArtOfAloha  - I'm sorry to hear that this issue with your Contactless + Chip Card Reader has brought you to the Seller Community.

I suggest starting out with the troubleshooting steps for your reader listed here. If this doesn't improve things, please reach out to Support directly by logging into your Square account and heading here for further assistance, as @JK_Fiber_Art mentioned.

I hope this helps!
