Is there a way to separate tips based on device?

We are both a cafe shop and separate a retail chocolate store, however all of our registers are ran on the square system.  We want to enable credit card tipping for transactions in the cafe and ice cream shop side, but it seems that it would all be linked across the board.  Is there any way to enable this by device?  Or will we just have to let each customer know that our retail side it can/should just be skipped past?

Hi @platters. Each POS has the ability to toggle the tip setting.  From Square POS, go to More -> Settings -> Checkout -> Tipping and toggle the tip option off.  If you are using Restaurants, go to Account -> Settings -> Checkout -> Tipping and do the same.

Note that if you are using shared device settings from your dashboard device settings, you will have to make these changes from your dashboard because shared device settings can’t be changed on the devices that use them.

Good Morning!  Thank you for the response.  When we turn it on on our cafe register then go to our retail register and try to turn it off specifically on that one, it shuts it down across the board.   Are we doing something wrong to where we can't do it the way you advised?  We are using the Square POS system.

@platters.  I guess it’s true that we learn something every day! I did not realize that toggling tipping on or off on one Square POS caused all Square POS to get the updated setting!  I have to wonder if that is expected behavior or not.  Hopefully, a Square person will chime in here.

In the meantime, I did a quick test to be sure that I had a possible workaround for you.  Have you considered using the Square for Retail POS in your retail shop, instead of the standard Square POS?  There is a free tier.  The interface is built more for the retail environment, anyway, and you might find other features there that you like, too.

If you want to give it a try, first go to your Dashboard -> Devices.  Add a new POS for Retail POS.  You’ll be given the opportunity to configure its settings there.  I tested it and found that I could say that my “retail” POS didn’t accept tips, and it did not affect any other POS.  Then, download the app to your retail tablet.  When you start it and sign it, you’ll do so using the device code that you were given in your dashboard — no userid/password needed.  I think this should get you what you want, if you’re willing to try out the Retail POS.

Let me know if you need anything else.
