Interac Refunds failing

I see this is an old thread, but we are likewise having "new" failed refund issues to debit cards. Credit cards seem to process fine. Often the refund in question is a very recent purchase. Ie: same day, moments before, or day prior.

Customer has made a purchase then changed mind (or the wife changed his mind for him...) or picked up something different on the way out. And the interac refund cannot be completed. In this case we have been doing unlinked refunds and giving back cash, but this is a very dangerous practice given that we know the purchases have not been batch closed for the day and original payment may not proceed.

Any ideas what's going on?

Hi @GrowGather, thank you for reaching out!

I did a bit of research and found these two requirements and limitations for Interac refunds:

  • Applications must have the following OAuth permissions: PAYMENTS_WRITE to process refunds and PAYMENTS_READ to retrieve refunds.
  • You cannot refund non-Interac payments with the Terminal API.

Do you know if these requirements are being followed?

I also found a helpful article on Interac refunds that may also provide you some insight.

I hope this helps! If not, please let me know and I can take another look.
