I have a loyalty program. $1 spent receives 1 star. 100 stars receive $10 discount at their next purcase. What happens if they have spent $450? Do they get $40 discount. If so how is it redeemed?

Is answered as:
As long as your customer has the points to meet the reward requirements, they can redeem multiple rewards.
So in your case, i think they would have $40 of rewards they could use.
I'm fairly sure they couldn't use it on the transaction generated the points (but maybe someone else will confirm) - I think that's the whole point of the loyalty - to get them to come back.

Tagging onto the great response by @lawnbrook, I’d like to confirm that if a customer uses a payment card linked to their Loyalty profile, any available rewards will automatically appear during checkout. Once rewards are selected and redeemed, you can proceed with the transaction as usual.
