How do I set up a contactless device with no tap?

I have contactless and reader device. Is there a way to turn off contact less and only use insert the card functionality?

there is not but unless someone is holding their phone or tap credit card next to the reader at the right time when you click charge in the app it won't take a tap payment.  

out of curiosity why don't you want tap payments?
