How do I attach a modification to a single variation

I have several variation options on my product and I'm wanting to separate the modifications for each variation. For example: I have single colour and two colour options on a product and I want to be able to give them the chance to pick their colours, however they can't move forward unless they pick colours from each option

At the moment modifiers can be assigned to an item, but not specifically to an item variation. In this instance I think the solution would have to be to create two seperate items - eg have Single Colour and Two Colour listed as two seperate items. You can then apply different modifier sets on each item, rather than both modifier sets on the one item. Hope this helps!
