Hey Seller Community!
I know many Australian businesses are doing it tough right now with COVID lockdowns - I thought it might be a nice distraction to talk about something completely different.
How did you come up with the name of your business? What about your logo? Is there a story behind it? Have you ever thought of changing it?
Here’s a fun fact about Square - when we first launched we were actually called Squirrel and one of the first reader prototypes was shaped like an acorn.
In the end the business name changed and our hardware aesthetic also changed to a cleaner and more minimal aesthetic.
Feel free to share your business name, how you came up with it and your logo too if you want. We look forward to reading your replies 🙂
Hi Seamus and the Square Community. I came up with Little Crooked House, because ....well...that's what I live in LOL. The place is so old that everything is on a slant. If I fill up the water dish for the dog, I have to be sure that its not too full or it pours out the other side. We just got new windows installed and the guy asked, do you want them crooked on the outside or the inside? He kind of halved and halved them so they dont look too bad. 🙂 My logo is of the house and the shape of Mount Dromedary where we live.
@RobbieB Hahahaha, thanks for sharing your story and logo! Your house sounds absolutely charming!
I've also lived in houses on a slant in the past. One place was ~100 year old workers cottage and I'm pretty sure the stumps were sinking into the ground, you could roll a ball down the hallway just by putting it down gently. Somehow we ended up getting slugs coming up through the floor as well. Hopefully you don't have to contend with slugs!
OMG Seamus, I would be right out the door! 🤢 We just have to contend with possums, a couple of feral cats, a wombat named Douglas (Doug for short) under our house and an occasional mouse...in the house, but that is QUITE the ordeal if that happens LOL. 🙂
@RobbieB I can happily report I no longer live in the slug house 🙂 Hopefully the feral cats somewhat cancel out the occasional mice!
I like the idea of having my own Doug the Wombat under the house, but having never lived near wombats I may be romanticising the concept a little!
Mine aren't that interesting haha.
This is the pub logo. Sketch/drawing of a photo of the pub
Main business is the Pub, but my main attraction is the chicken racing as below. The Chicken was mainly picked cause it was cheapest large format chicken that was racing ahaha
Secondary business is our little Pie shop, cafe. The chef and I thought we were clever.
I have a beer that you can only buy here, named after the noise chickens make!
Any of my merchandise (several shirt ranges, barman's, stubbie coolers, hats etc) have the clothing logo. More of a lark, but would like to push shirts more. Its my original pub dog in a sketch, he has sadly passed. I like the idea and name of "Pub Dog Clothing"
Far out! I thought I was busy 😂 I love the racing chicken and the Bawk Bawk Bitter 🐔
@ChickenRacer, I don't know where to start here, you have so much going on and so much of this is totally up my alley 😂
Visiting the Royal Carrangarra Hotel was already on my bucket list, but I'll now add to that having a pie and pint while watching a chicken race. Is that a remote control car with a bucket of chicken feed on back on your Facebook page? Amazing!
Thanks for sharing, I especially love the Bawk Bawk Bitter logo!
It is indeed a remote control car. This event gets people in and we raise money for the Royal Flying Doctors Service
🐔 Planning a trip to Australia to come to the Chicken Races. Wow. Amazing.
I wanted something that was a representation of me not a stereotypical beauty business. So my husband designed my logo for me, the only changes i have Made over the years are colour changes.
After recent closures
Covid
Pride month
Christmas
Loving the one with the mask....very intricate logo...well done!
Thanks for sharing @StudioB!
I love the way you've creatively adapted the original logo to a number of different variations ❤️
We have two logos, one is our more official brand that we use on our window, business cards etc, inspired by shopfront signage in Paris
And the other (and probably our favourite now) is based on the tattoo my wife bought me about 15yrs ago as a reminder of all the budgies I had as pets over the years.
Our first big business decision, in the early planning days about 10yrs ago, was to put a budgie on the wine glass as the pour line 😉 The budgie is now on coasters, menus and is our socials avatar.
Oh I am absolutely LOVING that pour mark 🙂
Beautiful ,elegant
Thanks for posting @Smithward!
Agreed with Robbie, really clever use of a pour mark - I didn't even notice that was the function to begin with, love seeing the additional hidden meaning in the budgie's perch.
As a bit of a typography nerd, I also love how well balanced the kerning is in both logos 🤓
Thanks @Seamus you wouldn't believe how much time was spent on that kerning 🤯 Glad it's appreciated
When I was planning the business model, name and logo of the parent company, I wanted something that represented growth, nurturing, and alot. - "Abundance" we had a few name changes before settling with "Abundance College" The logo is a combination of hands with a twist on the "Abundance" logo. Abundance The brown hand represents the roots (nurturing - our organisation) of the tree, with the green repsenting the branches (our clients, stakeholders) and the icons represent the education. We are an adult community college for Autistics and other neurodiverse people with barriers to employment. Abundance College Inc.
Our child company "Java Train" initially was the name of our coffee/rolled ice cream trailer. As this was built to provide the practical training that Autistics thrive on, we wanted to use "train" to represent training. We also agreed this would allow us to ride the tails of an already known food business "sushi train". Java is another name for coffee. We registered "Java Train Cafe" as a trading name of Abundance College Inc last December as we had acquired the lease of a partially fitted shop (fridges, benches, coffee machine, furniture) so we added "cafe" to the name and registered the domain name for our square online Java Train Cafe Online and set up our social enterprise. We have trained 18 students since October 2020, and have employed 3 people to run the cafe, with an autistic lady, who has shown so much potential, to be our cafe manager, and our female autistic advocate (my son is our male advocate for autism).
The logo is beautiful..I especially love it in the coffee cup..Well thought through and a wonderful story to boot ☺️
Hey again @Javatrain, thanks for sharing more about your business again, love what you're doing here to help out your local community!
I like the dual meaning us your use of the word "train", and the hands logo from Abundance College also adapts really well to the Java Train logo - in that different context and with different colours it looks like a crema swirl on top of the coffee, or even a bit like a coffee bean ☕️
