How can I enable an option to cover processing fees at checkout on Square Online?

Hi.

We are an Australian not-for-profit charity and we are setting up Square to take online donations.  We are wondering if there is a way that we can ALWAYS have appear an option for the customer to select to pay either a calculated or set fee to help us pay processing fees?

We have seen other charities have something like "Would you consider paying an extra $2 to help us with a processing fees" and customers can tick a toggle box to either opt in or out.

Is this possible with Square and, if so, how would we do this so that it appears for EVERY checkout transaction?

Thanks

Hi @FatalLordes,

Currently, Square doesn't support adding surcharges to Square Online sales. We understand there’s demand for this feature, and this thread is a good one to follow for feedback and announcements on surcharges in Australia.

Your question is unique since it sounds like you're considering an optional donation as a modifier to help cover online card processing fees, rather than as a charitable donation or for goods or services. I’d recommend caution here, especially for charity-related transactions, as it’s essential to stay compliant with ACCC regulations on surcharging. For a more sustainable approach, we recommend incorporating processing costs directly into the pricing of your items and services. 🙂

To be safe side, I suggest reaching out to our Support Team to confirm that using modifiers in this way aligns with compliance requirements. You can call support on 1800 760 137 (Mon - Fri, 9 AM - 5 PM Melbourne time), or contact us via online chat or email. See the below steps.

1. Sign in to your Square account.

2. Head to our contact page https://squ.re/3AWfZs2.

3. Go to "Other", then "I don't see my issue".

4. Click "Message us", "Email us" or "Call Us".

Or, if you see the new chatbot help flow, type “support” to bring up a list of contact methods.

I worked out a workaround by using a modifier that lists two options - yes, happy to contribute a set amount or no, don't want to contribute.  If anyone knows of any better way, please let me know 🙂
