How can I add all my customers to my email marketing?

Hey guys.

How can I add all my customers to my email marketing. *Beauty salon* I believe its a new feature.

I’m not sending them all a link to say they are happy to join a mailing list when they have already left me their email address for me to be able to send them marketing emails…

I can’t seem to find a way of manually adding people and it seems stupid asking everyone again for their contact details when they are already in my system.

Thanks in advance, Chloe

Hey @BeautyBAE,

Thanks for reaching out.

Your customers will need to opt in to receive marketing emails in order to maintain compliance with Australian spam laws and regulations. Entering customer info into your customer directory for the purposes of linking them to a sale/sending an invoice doesn't specifically call out giving consent to receive marketing - so this is why they will need to opt in!

Thank you for your response. Do they still need to ‘opt in’ if I am sending them marketing emails and text messages via other apps?

How can I get them to ‘opt in’?

@BeautyBAE It'd be up to you as the business owner to ensure you're aware of and complying with anti spam laws. If you've collected consent outside of Square this should be fine - though this isn't offered as legal advice though so do your own due diligence and consult with a professional as needed! Square has some tools to assist in gaining customer consent, but it's not the only way. You can read more about the different ways you can do this on Square here.

If you have existing consent for customers you can follow these steps to give your customers "subscribed" status in your customer directory:

  1. Go to Customer Directory in your online Square Dashboard.
  2. Select the customers who provided permission to receive marketing emails. If all customers have provided consent, go to step five.
  3. Click Add to Group.
  4. Select an existing group or select Create New Group. Then, select Add to Group.
  5. Once you’ve created a new group, click Export Customers.
  6. Click Specific Groups and choose the group.
  7. Click Export.
  8. Click Download to edit a CSV file containing your customers.
  9. Open the CSV file using Microsoft Excel or other common spreadsheet software.
  10. In the Email Subscription Status column, update “unknown” to “subscribed”. Click Save.
  11. Go back to your Customer Directory and select Import Customers.
  12. Follow the steps to drag and drop your file to upload or click select it from your computer. Ensure you review and tick the checkbox. Click Next.
  13. Assign applicable field labels. Click Import.
  14. Your customer’s email status will now appear as “Subscribed”.

 Hope this helps!
