Google pixel tap to pay suddenly stopped working

Google Pixel Tap to pay option is suddenly gone. Verified NFC is On, Developer Options/Mode is OFF. OS is version 13.  Reinstalled Square App multiple times and no luck. 

 

Square notifications say that Tap to pay is available but when I go to checkout it says to connect a device. There is no option under Hardware to select Tap to pay either.

@sprakkart Did you try restarting your pixel?  There are some known issues with pixel's and faulty NFC.  Most of the time this is fixed via a phone restart.  The other option is to also try your tap to pay at a merchant somewhere to verify it isn't the phone.  If the NFC is not working correctly the option won't show up.  Most likely this is a pixel issue instead of square.

Let's go through a comprehensive troubleshooting process:

  1. Basic Device Requirements Check:

    • Confirm your Pixel model (Tap to Pay works on Pixel 4a and newer)
    • Verify Android 13 is fully updated
    • Ensure Square app is updated to the latest version
  2. NFC Deep Check:

    • Go to Settings > Connected Devices
    • Tap "Connection preferences"
    • Toggle NFC off, wait 30 seconds
    • Toggle NFC back on
    • Restart your phone
  3. Square App Permissions:

    • Go to Settings > Apps > Square
    • Tap "Permissions"
    • Ensure NFC permission is enabled
    • Clear the app's cache and data:
      • Settings > Apps > Square
      • Storage & cache
      • Clear both Cache and Data
  4. Google Play Services Check:

    • Go to Settings > Apps
    • Find "Google Play Services"
    • Clear its cache
    • Check for updates
  5. Square Account Verification:

    • Log out of your Square account completely
    • Clear the app data (as mentioned above)
    • Log back in
    • Check if your account is properly verified for Tap to Pay
  6. Payment Settings Reset:

    • In Square app, go to Settings
    • Navigate to Payments
    • Look for "Reset Payment Settings" or similar option
    • Reconfigure your payment settings
