Gift card and tipping

Did this ever go anywhere? I just had a server with a $140 tab. $100 was processed to a gift card and the remaining balance was on a credit card. The signature receipt has the tip choice boxes with the total being $40 and the percentages to match. ie. 20% is $8. Where it should be 20% is $28. I know there’s a custom amount but most people just check the 20% without looking,

Hi @DSander, thank you for your post!

Could I get some clarification on what you mean by "did this ever go anywhere?" I am not familiar with this being an open issue, so just wanting to get some backstory. Was this an ongoing issue you were aware of? As well as, is this only occurring with gift card purchases?

I just want to make sure I have all the right information.

What I meant by “did this ever go anywhere” was that I was replying to a post from over a year ago and it was suggested to be added to a request to fix. It’s not really an error issue. It’s the way you have it setup.

As I mentioned in the example above, If you have a tab, say $100, and you do a split payment, let’s say $50 on a gift card and the rest on a credit card, the suggested tip on the credit card slip (when you have the tip guide turned on for printed receipts) only calculates on the balance after the GC has been applied. So is this scenario, It’s a $100 guest check, a $50 gift card is applied, then when the guests pays the rest on their card, their credit slip has the suggested tipping set to 18%, 20% or 22%. Those percentages are based off the balance of $50. So, when the guests pays and  gets the credit slip back for their $100 tab and just checks the 20% box, they’re tipping $10 and not $20.

It appears it’s setup for the same scenario as if two people split the tab on two credit cards. They would each get a credit slip for $50 each and if they both checked 20% they both would tip $10. But in a gift card scenario, when the full balance of $50 gift card was used, there’s no tipping on that half of the tab. and then the balance is on their credit card slip and that calculation is only done on half of the check. Make sense?

I understand, @DSander. Thank you for that context.

Do you by chance have a link to that older post you were referring to?

This is DEFINITELY A HUGE ISSUE!! I have the same issue at my Skincare studio. Somebody has $150 service pays with $100 gift card and then they’re only tipping on $50. No matter how the payment is split the tip percentage should ALWAYS be on the total amount.

There has to be a way for Square to make this happen! I can’t tell you how much money I’ve lost on gratuity because of this! It’s honestly infuriating!
