Fix tips! AH!

Hi,

I had myself, the owner, incorrectly marked as tip-eligible. Our tip distribution method is set to pool tips among all eligble workers who are clocked in. We have one register, which everyone uses at the same time (we move around a lot--everyone pitching in). The register is logged in under me because otherwise people would be logging in/out of the device every few minutes. So all of the tips show up as attributed to me today, with NONE being distributed to the other tip eligible workers.

1)Shouldn't these have been distributed amongst myself + the rest, even if my getting tips was inaccurate? Why are they all showing up in the report as attributed only to myself?

2) How do I retroactively change/fix the distribution so that I do NOT receive any of these tips and instead the other staff who were clocked in do?

Thank you!

Hey @MPDC.  To answer your questions, yes.  Early on I had mistakes in my tip pool and team setups and once I corrected those everything was recalculated.  Also, if you adjust tips or time cards for any reason, tips for that period are also recalculated.  So we need to go down a checklist.

  1. You said you’ve marked yourself as NOT tip eligible, right?
  2. Have you checked all of your tip-eligible team members to be sure that they are, indeed, marked as tip eligible?
  3. Also, have you checked their time cards for the period(s) in question?
  4. Can you post a screen shot (or two) of the definition of your tip pool?  That would help.

Lastly don’t worry about who was clocked in when tips were received.  In my shop, I do that all the time (I’m an owner, too, and not eligible of course).  Tips for transactions I close are always redistributed among my staff who worked at all that week (we use a 7-day pool).

Thanks so much for the quick response!

1. I have marked myself as not eligible for tips now. But yesterday I was (incorrectly) marked as eligible for tips and did not realize until after close.

2. yes, they are all correctly marked as tip eligible.

3. Yes, their time cards are accurate.

4. attached, let me know if this is what you meant!

I went in and updated a timesheet, but the tip distribution did not adjust – all of the tips are still showing up under my name. None under theirs. And then if I look at draft payroll, it just shows no tips period (since I'm not paying myself this pay period). Not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Good morning @MPDC.  First sorry for the delay.  Yesterday the AC unit for a building I lease went out. It was a long day of overtime diagnosis that is ongoing.  Perfect timing since we just started a massive heat wave here. Ugh. Anyway…

Everything certainly seems right with your setup.  You even have the unattributed tip distribution toggle on which should fix everything! All that’s left is to get on the phone with support.  I’m going to recommend making the time to call, not text chat or email.  There is something messed up somewhere that we can’t see. Hopefully they can reproduce the issue and escalate a trouble ticket to the engineers.

I’m sorry I can’t figure anything else out. I wish you the best.  When it gets resolved, please come back here and update this thread with the resolution.  That will help us all in the future.

One other thing. Since you probably must do payroll soon, remember that you can manually change tips there before you submit the payroll.  It’s not a perfect short-term solution, but it will allow you to pay your people on time while you are waiting on resolution.
