Exported Item catalog .xlsx can't be opening in Excel, Google Docs

For the past three days, I haven't been able to download and open my item catalog. I can't download a .csv without getting a host error, and the .xlsx I download can't open in Excel or Google Docs.  My inventory data is garbled and I cannot fix it or choose "undo catalog" as that gives me an error as well.

I just downloaded my Catalog.csv and Excel Catalog.  Both opened fine with the newest versions of Excel.  I am not sure if it used Excel 365 online or my downloaded version.  The biggest issue I have with Excel with a csv file it auto assumes SKU numbers as a Number and makes it scientific numbers instead of all 8-11- etc digits.    I also use to use LibreOffice which is similar to MicroSoft Office but is free.  : https://www.libreoffice.org/ 

the thing I like about this besides opening Excel and CSV files is that before opening them you get sample data and can change the Data format before opening the data and ruining it.  So like the GTIN or SKU fields you can change from General to Text so you do not loose the leading 0 if your GTIN or SKU has a leading zero.  yes you can save the workbook as an excel file workbook or just CSV.  I did come across an error trying to upload a csv file since it does not have my Units Conversions sheet attached, which is understandable.  

 

Did you try uploading the catalog you downloaded which would be before you opened it?  When I download my catalog and then Open it I always save it with a different name or do no save it to protect the one I just downloaded from Square.

I haven't downloaded mine since 4/30. I am trying to replace the current catalog with that one, but I get a something went wrong error with that as well.

Sounds like something went wrong when you originally downloaded the file if you can not read it still and it is all garbled. When you download your catalog it should bae able to be Opened after uploading it to Google Sheets.

 

What Program are you trying to open the files with?   I wonder if you download one now if you can read it?   And if you are trying to go back to 4/30 file...... see if there is a catalog before 4/30 that you could use?  I have not run into any problems when I download my catalog, but if you lost your connections or exited Square before it downloaded fully that could explain why you have nonsense for your file.

I've downloaded it more than 10 times since  5/5, when this problem began. None of them open in Google Sheets or Excel. Nor can I upload the one I downloaded 4/30, though I can open it.
I just noticed that the one I can open is like 6 megabytes. All the useless ones I've downloaded are less 10 kb. There's no data in them. I opened some up as zip files and say that all the data is missing. This is just the xlsx shell with the formatting.

What web Browser are you using when logging into Square?   I use Chrome and I know Square recommends Chrome.  Sounds like the ones you can not open either did not fully download or may have been interrupted by maybe saying Download the Items Catalog and closing your browser before it downloaded.  On my pc when I go to download the Catalog of 6000 items it takes a little time to complete.  Not 5 min or anything like that but also not 5 seconds.  I am just guessing here trying to help.

All these attempts have been made through Chrome, on two different computers and using 4 different internet connections. I just tried Edge and got another 4kb file.  I have now confirmed all the same problems on Edge.

How are you getting the Downloaded files as Zip Folders / Files?  My Catalog just shows as a csv or xlsx file depending which I chose for downloading, nothing to unzip for my catalog.  Xlsx files are the Excel format, and CSV is comma separated values format.  You should not be getting a Zip folder or zipped file for your catalog as far as I am aware of. 

From message 5 you wrote 'I opened some up as zip files and say that all the data is missing. '

 

 If you have excel you should be able to just double click the file to open it.   And if you are using Google Sheets you need to upload the csv or xlsx file to Google sheets for it to open it. 

 

What are the extensions on your file your trying to open?  Here is a screen shot of mine.  The 2 with white lines are PDF unrelated to this.   But as you see all the rest have catalog-date-time.csv or catalog-date-time.xlsx. 

I have one catalog  that is .ods but that was the way I saved it after opening it in LibreOffice to differentiate it for me so I would not upload it to Square.

If you are not getting these types of files (csv or xlsx ) and are getting a Zip file you may want to call Square Support, as I am just a user and do not work for Square.
