DS6707 Barcode reader is not capatable with Square app on Android?

I bought a DS6707 barcode reader because it was listed as a compatible reader with the square app on Android. I have a Galaxy s20 FE 5G running the Square app (Version 6.70sw) on Android 13. I got a USB otg adapter and plugged in the barcode reader, however it does not automatically populate the cart as it should. If I click the search bar in the library before scanning it will type out the barcode in the search for me and I can then click on the item that way (so it is treating it as a keyboard basically). If I try scanning while not active in the search bar it makes the hardware menu pop up. But the barcode reader does not show up on the list of connected devices.

Am I doing something wrong? If this reader does not work with Square on Android then their compatible reader list needs to be updated!

I think that is the way it works with Cell or Tablets through Square as a Keyboard Device.  I have the DS6878 which shows on my Squarestand as a DS6707.  On the Stand I do not have to tap the search bar before scanning, but if I connect it by Bluetooth to the Ipad I need to Tap the Search area before scanning, and then Tap the Item to enter it to the Checkout Cart.  Since the Barcode is being Populated after tapping the Search Field Box, the scanner is working with Square to locate the correct item and would be considered compatible.

This might be something that is different because your using a mobile device instead of a Square Stand or Register.

So I do not think you are doing anything wrong and this sounds more like the way USB Scanners work with Android cell phones.  I have the same cell but do not use it with a Scanner.  Since I do not work for Square I do not know if what your experiencing is expected behavior or not.

I have another barcode reader (LS2208) that is listed as not compatible with square on android, yet it is working the same way as the DS6707. Android is treating it as a keyboard. I don't know why one is listed as compatible and the other as not if they both are working the same way (not putting items directly into the cart).

I think the big reason was a few years ago before OTG adapters, all USB Scanners where not compatible with Square on Android devices like a Cell or Tablet.  I am wondering if Square missed this on an updated compatibility update.

Maybe a Square moderator can confirm this @MayaP .

Hey @Candlestore @Sithkazar,

To clarify, we’re trying to understand why the LS2208 and DS6707 are operating as keyboard devices when connected to your Galaxy S20 FE 5G. If you’re able to share a video or any additional details showing what you’re experiencing, we’d be happy to escalate this further.

I can not show why my DS6707 how it is acting like a Keyboard with Android as I do not have an OTG adapter.  I do connect the DS6707 (as that what Square sees it as, but it is actually a DS6878)  The DS6878 is able to connect to a Square Stand by USB to the stand or by Bluetooth.  When connected by USB it scans without tapping the search bar.  When connected by Bluetooth I do have to tap the Search area on the checkout tab in Square for Retail.  I am not sure if the DS6878 is on the compatibility list but it has worked fine with the USB connection to a Square Stand since 2019.  Again this is how it is for me with an Ipad but I can not connect it to Square on an Android device either by USB or Bluetooth.  Since I use the Bluetooth with an Ipad, I am guessing there is a Different programming Barcode I need to scan to have it visable as an Android Keyboard instead of the IOS keyboard right now but I do not want to change these in fear of not getting it to connect again. Currently it just shows as no compatible scanners when using the Square App, but Android OS can see it.  Again I do not think this scanner is on the Compatiblity list or wasn't when I bought it in 2019.

Yeah, there could definitely be some differences in how the iPad and Android handle programming, but to be honest, I’m not 100% sure.

Are you trying to get your device to function more like an Android keyboard? If so, there isn’t anything additional you can scan to make that happen.

I only use the Ipads for items I sell, I just connected my scanner by bluetooth to my android phones to see if I could help here.   On my android devices I usually just type in a SKU to locate the item if needed, but mostly the Android is used for checking sales and reports not looking up items.

There really isn't anything to show. I have a square register in my store and the LS2208 plug into it and works with no problem. I scan a barcode and the item is added to the cart automatically. I do some mobile events where I have to use my phone (because i do not have access to power for the register). I would like to be able to use a barcode reader with my Galaxy S20 FE 5G and the square app on Android to do the same thing. I scan a barcode and it adds the item to the cart.

I tried connecting the LS2208 first because I had it on hand and it did not function like that. It still is working, but when I scan it "types" the barcode out in the search bar. I checked the list of compatible barcode readers on square's help site and noticed that the LS2208 is listed as not compatible with Android, so I found a different reader that is listed as compatible and purchased a DS6707.

However it functions the same way as the reader i already have. I plug it into my phone, I read a barcode, and (if I had clicked on the search bar) it will type out the bar code. If I am not on the search bar then it does nothing (I stopped it from opening the hardware menu by resetting the reader to default settings). It does not put the items in the cart like the barcode reader does with my Square Register.

Square needs to verify their compatibility list. I need to know what barcode reader will work with Android as it should and add items to the cart when scanned.

Ok I think I understand now. So the Zebra Symbol DS6707 is connecting to your device and scanning, but it is not scanning items the same way your Square Register does, correct?

I’m happy to look into this further. If possible, could you send a video showing how it scans on the Register versus your device? From what I’m gathering, the scanner is technically connecting, just not functioning the way you need it to.

I am heading off for the weekend, but I am happy to pick this up again next week @Sithkazar

I am not sure how to upload a video. But here is a screenshot of what the barcode reader does on Android (if I click on the search bar first). If I don't click the search bar then it just does nothing. I have to then click on the item and select the variation manually.

On the register the item is sent directly to the cart. You don't have to search or click on it. That is how registers with barcode readers are supposed to work.
