In regards to offering gift cards, I wish it was working a bit more like how it works in Zettle...
We used to (in Zettle) be able to create gift cards with custom codes. This enabled us to sell gift cards through our online store (without directing customers away from our site) and we could later add the purchased gift card code to Zettle manually. In this way, people could buy gift cards from us online that they could both use in-store and on our website for other products that we sell there.
It seems there is no way to set up a gift card without it actually having been sold through Square. We used to sell our gift cards via our online store and this approach gave us more freedom than what the Square eGift Cards solution currently offers. We'd like to sell gift cards through our own system and then later add them manually to the till using a custom code that corresponds to the gift card we've already sold via our website. Hope that makes sense.
Although it's nice that Square has its own standalone gift cards functionality, for us, I think it would be better with a solution similar to a traditional coupon code (like in Zettle) as that gives us more flexibility in terms of integrating between our website and our coffee shop and between different platforms/IT systems.
