Credit Cards saving to wrong account

I have several customers that I run daily invoices through Square. Several months ago, one of their credit cards somehow was associated with a different client's Square profile, and their card started to run for some else's invoice. I've been in touch with tech support and my square rep about this. The only answer I could get is that somehow we had updated this client's account, and that is why a credit card was inadvertently linked. We never physically held this credit card or entered the information, everything was done on the client end. Has anyone else had these issues of credit cards being compromised?

Hello @koffeteria !

Depending on how you allow your customers to pay the invoices can lead to confusion for sure. If they pay out on the point of sale and get to a receipt screen, it's possible to update their email address. The card would then be linked to the new email, and if they just pay out an invoice at a later date it can cause this kind of problem.

The other thing to remember is that once a customer is in your system, their information is accessible once they hit any other Square merchant. If they updated their information and/or the other merchant messed things up, it will impact their account.

Best way to fix this is to unlink the card information from the customer. Yes, they will have to re-enter their information, but IMO it's a small price to pay for making sure their information wasn't compromised.

Dashboard -> Customers  find the customer info, remove the credit card.

Hope this helps!
