Choosing between USB and printer-driven cash drawer

Working on a purchasing a register setup, but I can't find a definitive answer on whether receipt printing can be disabled when using a printer-driven cash drawer. The use-case will not require a printer most of the time, but one will still be connected.

In a printer-driven cash drawer setup, can the printer be configured to not print, but still open the drawer?  Or is the physical printer motor motion required to open the drawer?

Hi @pmkjfg

I will need to test this but I'm leaning towards no - the drawer will not open with receipt printing disabled. The drawer responds to the printer's activity. If you configure the printer to be unresponsive to print receipts, the drawer will not open.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for your response. If you or someone else has time to confirm it would be greatly appreciated. I'm surprised this isn't a more common use-case.

I confirmed with my Team, it's not doable. @pmkj

@JustinC , Thank you for confirming. Am I wrong to assume that this 'is' possible with a USB cash drawer?

No, you're not wrong in assuming - with a USB hardware set up, the drawer and receipt printer function independently @pmkj
