Can I sign up for a Square account if I'm under 18 years of age?

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: How to use square as a minor?

I’m under 18 and can’t set up for the payment options being under 18 but u do have an ABN and setting a bank up.

Could I have a parent apply for it? I’m in Australia.

Hi @Jordy1457! Thanks for your post.

Square follows current credit card processing regulations, which require that our customers be at least 18 years of age.

While one of your parents could sign up for a Square account (as an Individual/Sole Trader with no ABN) using their own personal details, they would need to consider the tax implications before doing so, as any profits generated would be associated with their own personal taxable income.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Hi @Jordy1457,

Thanks for your follow-up question.

When signing up for a Square account, the ABN provided must match the Account Owner's details. This means your Mum would not be able to use your ABN when creating an account. Instead, she would need to sign up as an Individual/Sole Trader either without an ABN or using her own ABN.

It's important to note that regardless of whether your Mum signs up on your behalf with or without an ABN, any income generated would be attributed to her as an individual. This means that the income from your Square account would be reported under her personal details for tax purposes, in accordance with Australian laws.

Hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

So how do I unlink all that then, cause I made the square account under all my details and then verified my identity with hers and put my ABN in.

@Jordy1457 Once an ABN is added to a Square account, it can't be removed. So in this case, you won't be able to continue with this account.

When your Mum has some time, please have her call our Phone Support team on 1800 760 137, and they can walk through the next steps to deactivate the account. The team is available from Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, Melbourne Time.
