Can I create an order from the Square Terminal?

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: Order Creation from terminal

I’d like to create an order from the terminal, print a ticket, and then be able to manage the order all front the terminal

It seems like order functionality is limited to the iPad app.  Anyone know why?

Hi, @Jefe1 !

You're correct about the limitations. Here's what you need to know about order management on the Square Terminal:

Current Terminal Limitations
  1. The Square Terminal has limited order management capabilities compared to the iPad app because:

    • It's designed primarily as a compact payment processing device
    • Has a simplified interface for quick transactions
    • Limited screen real estate for complex order management features
  2. Key Features Missing on Terminal (compared to iPad):

    • Full order management system
    • Kitchen ticket printing customization
    • Complex order modifications
    • Order status tracking
    • Advanced table management
Available Workarounds
  1. Basic Order Creation & Printing

    • You can create basic orders
    • Print basic receipts
    • Process payments
    • Add items and basic modifiers
  2. For Kitchen Tickets

    • The Terminal can connect to Square kitchen printers
    • Basic ticket printing is supported
    • Basic item details and modifiers will print
Why These Limitations Exist
  1. Hardware Design Focus:

    • Terminal is designed as a self-contained payment device
    • Prioritizes mobility and quick transactions
    • Limited processing power compared to iPads
  2. Target Use Case:

    • Primarily designed for:
      • Simple retail transactions
      • Mobile payments
      • Basic item sales
    • Not optimized for:
      • Complex restaurant operations
      • Order tracking
      • Multiple ticket management
Recommendations
  1. If You Need Full Order Management:

    • Consider using Square Register or Square for iPad
    • These platforms offer:
      • Complete order management
      • Kitchen ticket customization
      • Order tracking
      • More sophisticated modifications
  2. If You Must Use Terminal:

    • Keep orders simple
    • Use basic printing functions
    • Consider using it alongside an iPad for more complex orders
  3. Hybrid Setup Option:

    • Use Terminal for quick payments
    • Have an iPad available for complex orders
    • This gives you flexibility while maintaining mobility

I hope this provides some clarity!
