Can I connect a separate reader to square terminal

I have a square terminal. Ideally I want to purchase a separate card reader and use with the terminal. 
may thinking behind this is that I can keep the terminal and barcode scanner behind the counter and have a separate reader to go on the front counter

Nope - currently the terminal doesn't connect to any BT accessories and this includes the square reader. 

You can you the terminal in 'connected mode' where if you have your phone/tablet on your side of the counter the terminal can act as a keypad and interface for the customer.
