An employee started a cash drawer with $1M instead of $100. Closed it $999,900 short. What to do???

I'm aware that Square doesn't allow editing cash drawers after they are closed. My cash drawer reporting is just thrown all out of whack because of this. Is there some creative accounting-type fix I can do to reset the balance? I'm considering opening a drawer at $0 and closing it at $999,000. That way the reporting at least stops saying I'm that much short?

And while we're on the subject I am seeing a few old cash drawers from months ago that were started but never closed, and have sales counted on them. I have no idea how that happened but our actual cash from that period has been deposited and accounted for. Do I close the drawer and just enter the 'actual' amount as the same as the 'expected'?

And I guess the overall question here is: does any of the data in Cash Drawer Reports on the Square Dashboard matter, as long as YOU know that your actual cash is accounted for? Like, it's just an aid for tracking, right? It doesn't affect sales reporting, or any tax forms that Square files for your business, right? So if the bottom line of my cash drawer reports for this year says $1,017,898.13 expected and ($1,000,464.78) actual.... it doesn't matter as long as my actual cash in the bank adds up and my bookkeeping is noting the errors and logging the correct amounts?

It's just annoying to see a wrong number in my reports that I can't do anything about... ugh!

I could be wrong but I'm positive those reports are for your records only. They don't get turned over to anyone unless you're doing that yourself.

For your random drawers I would just enter the amount as expected. I have this happen during busy times when one of us grabs our spare iPad or I grab my phone to ring someone up. Just print the ticket and then make adjustments there so you have a record for yourself.

Things like this would drive me crazy too so I know where you're coming from
