Adding taxes to books in Canada

I'm setting up my website and among our products we have books, which only have the 5% portio of the federal tax applied to them all across the country except NewfoundLand.

Is there a way to mark an item as NOT needing to have the provincial tax added when selling online? (from all the info I have, the purchaser's address is the deciding factor as to the final tax rate) I don't want to change the tax rate of the entire website as fully half our products have both taxes in every province too.

thanks!

Hi @Wizard300 and @healingstream! Great question.

So, this will not be possible with just one online store because we do not have tax settings available for certain shipping regions, like Newfoundland. What you will need to do as a workaround is create a second location in your Square Account and create a second Online Store for just that region (or other regions if this applies to more than one). From there, you will need to create tax rule(s) specific for those areas.

You will still be able to share your inventory amounts between locations, but your Newfoundland clients will have a different URL to use. You will also need to make sure that with both sites you add/remove Newfoundland from the Canadian shipping region, that way it prevents ordering from people who shouldn’t.

I hope this makes sense, but please let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

But what about the other provinces; can i flag an item to let square know that it should only apply the 5% federal portion of the tax when charging to a customer residing in X province?

otherwise it will simply charge full tax on every item

@Wizard300 if other provinces have the same tax rules as Newfoundland, then I would direct them to that site and only use your first location for residents that need the 5% federal portion.

Hello

I have the same problem (different taxes on books) I was wondering why you do not activate "item-level taxes" for orders with shipping. That would solve the problem easily... No?  🙂

Thank you

Hi and welcome to the Seller Community! 👋

This would be considered a feature request at this time, @Éd_Aleska01. I will make sure to pass this over to our product team for their visibility and consideration.
