Turn off PAY button in Menu tab with no active check

In quick serve mode, when you press the pay button when there is nothing on the check, it allows you to proceed with a $0.00 check and opens the drawer.

I don’t know why the Square POS allows this as it allows cashiers the ability to easily open the drawer and potentially accept cash directly while acting like they are putting it in the register (ie theft).

My last POS was Clover and it didn’t allow this. This is a big security issue.

Please make it so you can’t process a $0.00 check. Clicking the pay button with no check on it should do nothing.

My suggestion: make the pay button greyed out and unclickable until an item gets put on the check, after which it turns green or blue.

Hi @gkgrill,

Thanks for reaching out to share your use case and feedback around the cash drawer functionality.

Could you please confirm the cash management setting assigned to the Checkout permission for your team members?

There’s an option to toggle the ability to open the cash drawer outside of a transaction, which may be relevant here.

To check this in your Square Dashboard:

1. Navigate to Staff > Team > Permissions.

2. Select Team Permissions (or the specific permission set assigned to your team members).

3. Under Checkout, scroll to Cash Management and confirm whether this setting is enabled.

It’s possible that Square doesn’t treat a $0.00 amount as a sale, but still allows cash drawer access when completing this action. If that’s the case, I can verify with my team whether this is the expected behaviour.

In the meantime, please let me know whether this option is enabled and if the drawer still opens when completing a $0.00 transaction.
