Square Register Sale while not logged in

When not logged in to our Square Register, a passcode is required to open the cash drawer with a no sale, this is good.

Also, when not logged in to our Square Register a passcode is NOT required to perform a sale and open the cash drawer, this is bad.

I would really like to set it so that when no user is logged in, no information is accessible, is this possible?

Hi @FoodBasket,

If you go to Settings > Security > Passcodes you'll be able to set some additional passcode settings - eg to require a passcode after every sale. You'll need to first enter your owner passcode to edit these settings.

I think this is what you're looking for? Let us know if you need any further help 🙂

Hi Seamus, unfortunately, that is not what I am looking for.

Because we have a pretty high turnover, we are at times, doing more than 1 sale per minute. We don't want the additional delay of entering the passcode between every single sale.

What we are wanting however is to be able to lock the register when we walk away for a minute. Currently, when no user is logged in you can still open the cash drawer by completing a sale. I would like that when a cashier logs out, the cash drawer cannot be opened.

Thanks, Mick.

@FoodBasket there are also options for a 30 second, 1 minute or 5 minute timer - under the same area in settings! Would this help?

Hi Seamus, sorry for the slow response, I had missed your reply.

I don't believe setting a timer would fix the issue.

We can sign out when we walk away from the register, that is not the issue.

The issue is that you can enter a sale while not logged in. What I would really not like is for a customer to enter a sale while we aren't looking and use this to open the cash drawer. It really is quite a flaw in the software which leaves us quite exposed.

@FoodBasket Got you. I had a play around with a Register and this is the process that I used to lock the device (but not after each sale).

1. Press Logout (staff member's initials)

2. Register requires a passcode to re-enter:

Does this solution work for you? Just trying to get a sense of whether or not this is something that may be solvable via settings or not!

Hi Seamus, my screen looks slightly different to yours.

I am able to log out and come to a similar screen, requesting a passcode:

However, if I click on the X in the top left corner, it takes me to this screen:

From that screen, I can create a sale without logging in.

My concern with this is, if a customer were to create a sale for any item and the choose cash as payment, it opens the cash drawer.

@FoodBasket Hmmm, I don't actually see that X on the test unit I have available. I'd say your best bet here is to call support for further assistance on 1800 760 137 (9am-5pm in Melbourne). I took a look at the Register settings but couldn't see anything, in particular, that may influence whether that X appears or not.

It does look doable - I'm just not sure how and can't find any resources on this particular feature! It's possible the test unit we had in the office was logged into a non-admin team member, so you might want to check the Register settings while logged in as an admin as well.
