Small cafe, single location, Restaurants + Kiosk + KDS.
Curious whether anyone has solved this or found a workaround I've missed.
The problem
Sourdough bread exists in my catalog as eight separate modifiers across eight modifier sets. Rustic Wheat and Texas Toast are the same. Ciabatta and Rye are in seven each.
When we run out of a bread mid-shift, marking it sold out is eight separate toggles in the Dashboard. Miss one and someone orders a sandwich on bread we don't have. I've got a small, newly trained crew, so every extra step is a step that gets skipped on a busy morning.
Why I can't just merge the modifier sets
Each sandwich needs a different bread pre-selected — Reuben defaults to Rye, Texan Club to Texas Toast, Chicken Salad Plate to Croissant Loaf. In my testing, defaults set at the item level don't render on Kiosk; only the default set on the modifier set itself shows up. So a separate modifier set per default seems to be the only way to get that behavior. The duplication is the workaround, not the problem.
What I'm hoping someone knows
- Any way to share or link one modifier across multiple modifier sets, so sold-out applies everywhere at once?
- Does Square Recipes or Square Restaurant Inventory (MarketMan) drive modifier availability from ingredient stock? Everything I can find talks about item variations, not modifiers. If you're running either, does it actually work at the modifier level?
- Has anyone gotten per-item modifier defaults to render correctly on Square Kiosk? If that works, the whole duplication goes away and this stops being a problem.
Interested in workarounds too, not just official answers. For now I've renamed my modifier sets with a counter — "Bread 1/9", "Bread 2/9" and so on, with the default and the sandwiches listed — so at least my crew knows how many there are to hit. It's a bandage, but it beats hunting.
