Price Embedded Barcodes & Mettler Toledo Scales

My client is a newly-opened brick and mortar cheese shop. They are currently running Shopify POS  and a 3rd party app called Price Embedded Barcode Scanner. Long story short, it works very poorly with fractional weight products and we're investigating other options.

I reached out to Square after reading this article: https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/7419-scanning-bar-codes-from-label-printing-scales-on-point-...

I'd love to hear real-world feedback on the experience others have had running Square POS and Mettler Toledo scales selling fractional weight products. Having used Square before, I'd love to use it in this situation, but only if it works extremely well with fractional weight. A Square rep I spoke with said they can't connect me with any and I'd need to post here.

I appreciate any and all feedback!

I don't sell fractional weight products but I think I know someone who can help.  I'll message them now and see if they do.

@GourmetOnWheels Was thinking you'd be a good resource, but I guess you do not use the Retail app. Out of curiosity, do you do fractional weights for cheeses and meats?

The fractional weight feature works very well in Square for Retail. I use fractional units in my shop but not weights. Really the question is going to be if that particular model scale is supported. Not all of the different accessories available in the market will work with Square. Same with barcode scanners, receipt printers and cash drawers. Some that aren’t listed as supported will work. I actually use a zebra scanner that isn’t listed but works great. So best thing I can advise is to check and try to make sure you get a scale that’s listed as being supported. But as far as the sales by weight feature that works very well in Square for Retail

We use fractional weights with Square for Retail and it’s absolutely fantastic. We sell loose tea to the tenth of an ounce. It’s very simple to set up and use, and I’ve never run into any problems with selling, reporting, or inventory control.

That said, I’ve never used a price embedded barcode because it’s not the right fit for my business. What I do is stick a barcode with the item SKU on the bag and handwrite the weight on the label. Prices are posted separately. When I scan the barcode Square prompts me to enter the weight, which I get from the label.

I sell almost all of my cheeses by weight If you have any questions DM me or post them here.

I use a Bizerba Scale that prints my product labels with tare, packed date, use by date,  price per pound, price per piece etc.

Those items are in my Square POS as a variable by weight and when selling at my farmers' market I enter the weight and the price is in.

For deliveries, I weigh the items and add them to the customer order when the order is complete I save the ticket and the customer pays upon delivery.

For contactless delivery, I put it on their doorstep, then text them the picture and send the ticket as an invoice and wait until someone picks it up from the home (takes 3-5 minutes)
