Neither 'retail' app or standard app will work!! needs tweaking.. *FIXED NOW*

Right, over the past month I've being talking to a very nice chap (Alex) at Square help about a basic but very important compatibility issue, with the app and hardware. 

 

The issue - The retail app does not allow you to connect the 'Terminal' card reader for payments only the 'reader'.

This means as nearly all our products are over the contactless amount, all our customers need to enter a pin number, so we have to move the iPad off it's stand so the customer can enter the pin???

 

After speaking with Alex, we found that the standard retail square app, does allow you to connect the square terminal, so the customer can just inset a card and enter the pin, and sale done, which is great, or so I thought. 

But..... here's the big BUT.....  the barcode reader does not work in the square app, the reason being.. when you scan a product the software does not search the GTIN for the product, it searches the SKU code field??? so none of our items will scan in the standard app, unless we delete the SKU codes and change the SKU to the barcode number!!

 

Please please can someone write the small line of code that allows me to connect the 'Square Terminal' to the 'Retail' app, this would sort all my issues. as at the moment Ive got £1000's of Square hardware that does not work with each other.

We had a similar problem, opted to pop the EAN-13 in the SKU field. Works a dream. 

 

Can't speak for Square but in general it can take sometime for ideas to be implemented. There is a process and as you can imagine there are a lot of feature requests for the Square team to work through. I would go to ideate and add the suggestion, however in the meantime it might be worth adding the barcode to the sku field to cover your needs until Square get chance to look at the feature request.

Yes this is what Square advised, however we need the SKU code listed - as that is the SKU code, and as the products are linked to our square website for stock control Etc. thats not an option, at the end of the day it is a fault with the software that the barcode scanner is searching the SKU field, really its a fault that needs fixing, not a fault that customer need to "work around".

 

But thanks for your comment I'm just hoping that Square notice the issue and correct it.

 

Even better would be for them to enable the link of 'square terminal' to Square retail, as the retail app seems better suited for...... well a retail environment 🙂

We have a separate sku which we use for internal reference but just don't use our allocated skus with the Square system, and let the barcode in the sku field sync with our website. But we are using the POS app on an ipad in our shop not Square for Retail, we find the functionslity a bit better for our retail environment. What I'm kinda eluding to is it may take sometime before its looked at. Sometimes the request may be in thier sights to address but if not, a  temporary workaround is sometimes needed until the it's looked at. Either way it's a good feature request and fingers crossed it's looked at soon. 👍

Hi @CampingMan, welcome to the Seller Community 👋 and thank you, Phillip, for all of your insights and experience you've shared here. 

 

Firstly, I'm sorry that it was not clear that the Square for Retail app cannot yet be connected to the Square Terminal before you moved your business over to Square. 

 

Connecting the Terminal to the Point of Sale app was a huge feature launch for us last year, but as Phillip mentioned a lot of work and planning goes into developing these new features and given that we have various different apps, this feature has only been rolled out to one so far. 

 

I have just reached out to Retail to ask if this connection will be on the roadmap for 2023, I won't be able to share any specific details, but hopefully, I can provide some insight here. I'll let you know when I hear back. 

 

Please do go ahead and submit this request to our product teams here anyway. Be sure to include some details about how you'd use this in your business day-to-day - it really helps highlight why a given feature request should be prioritised.

Great thank you very much for your information.

 

As a test we asked a few customers yesterday if they would be happy, if we spun the square stand around so they could input their card pin number on screen.

Everyone we asked said they would not be comfortable entering their PIN number when the screen completely in view of other customers behind them waiting to be served.

 

Great to see that this issue is being looked at, its just frustrating that when the app was released that no one thought that it would be an issue?

 

Thanks again, I have everything crossed that it is sorted asap, as at the moment I'm having to use our old till systems, and the £1000's we have spent of Square hardware is hardly being used.

The main issue has now been fix 🙂

 

You can now connect square 'Terminal' to the Square Retail app, this seems to be running perfectly at the moment.

After this thread, I learned that this feature was in fact in beta for Square for Retail. 

 

We should have an official product update to share soon! I'll be sure to add it here when we have it for any future visitors on this thread.
