Hi everyone,
We operate on a pay-as-you-go system in our café, and I’m wondering if anyone can help me figure out the best workflow for handling multiple bills per table using the Square Terminal.
For example — if there are 5 people at a table, we’d like to take 5 separate transactions, but all linked to the same order or docket.
Our previous POS system (IMPOS) allowed us to hold a docket while we processed separate payments, and then send it off once everyone had paid.
From what I can see in Square, I can split a payment after an order is placed, but not have individual orders per person under one table that can each pay separately.
Is there any way to achieve this on Square Terminal — or with Square for Restaurants — without needing to fully close the sale after each person pays?
Any advice, settings, or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!
Hi again @riverston86.. I can partially answer your question.
As far as the Square for Restaurants POS on a tablet goes, once you have your floor plan table layout, you can open as many checks as you want for one table. I learned this quite by accident. In my shop, we have only walk-up window service. So my floor plan is simply two tables -- one for the left window and one for the right window.
One day, both myself and a team member opened up checks simultaneously on the same table. When I went to close mine, I noticed two open transactions -- one assigned to me and one to the other team member. So, I picked mine, closed it and the other one remained active. It seems that multiple checks on any table is a feature, already.
My assumption would be that the same is true of a Terminal configured as a Restaurants mobile device. But, I can't say with 100% certainty that this is true. Still, you should be able to test that theory out with a couple of test checks yourself. The best part is that there will be none of the "splitting" headaches, as long as people know ahead of time how they will be paying.
