I need help with this. Went live today. Had a customer walk out because of problems with her order I could have easily fixed but because I could not physically locate her check it was a complete disaster. Totally embarrassing. Am I really to understand that I cannot search checks or transactions by the name the customer gave us? This is the only thing that connects the customer to their order. How am I supposed to pull up a customers closed check/transaction? For example, cash paying customer says they paid for an item 1 hour ago but did not receive it. How do I check? Or I need to refire a ticket on an order when the customer is not present with their card or reciept number? How do I find that order. This is a regular part of our day. Pulling up settled checks for any reason, maybe they just want a receipt for something they purchased earlier. Countless reasons to do this. Please tell me I am making a dumb noob mistake. I tried countless times. No search results when I type in the name that we named the check.
You can search transactions by customer name. Are you trying to pull them up on a tablet or phone?

With anycustomer that you associate their Name with the Transaction, you can type in the name of the Customer in the top Right. Now you did not state what Type of order this was? (Phone, Online, In-store, etc) Depending on the transacation type you have different ways to look them up, but the easiest is using the Transactions tab in the lower portion of your Screen to see all current transactions. Cash transactions will only have a Name associated with them if you or your employee entered their name on their check. Also with some Credit Cards it only shows Discover User for a Discovery card etc.
Now to add Transactions to the bottom of your screen you can Tap More then Customize top Right.
This will let you add 4 different Tabs on the bottom, Currently I have Checkout, Inventory, Transactions, and Notifiacations. I know Square has a few you can not edit or remove I believe its Checkout and Notifications, so you can choose 2 others that fit your needs.

So I have been searching for a known name of a ticket, one that we typed in when we sent the order, in the "search transactions " field on the transactions page. "No Search Results" every time.
I am using Square for Restaurants on a Square Register. Not an iPad. I believe this makes a big difference. I think you might be able to search by name on an ipad. Not sure. But so far I cannot search transactions by name on the Square Register.
OK. I have confirmed that there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO SEARCH BY NAME on square Register. Confirmed it with customer support. You ARE able to search by name when using Square for restaurants on an iPad which I figured out from the replies here (including the best answer above) telling me that searching by name is possible. Obviously those (very helpful people, thanks guys!) are not using square register and that makes the difference. So I tried it on ipad and it works just like it should. I now need to install an iPad in my shop just so I can search by name on that. That's pretty absurd. But at least I have some way to look up a check. I just need to confirm that adding that iPad isn't going to count as an extra register I need to pay for.
This is so frustrating. This function is just so basic. Is it just an oversight? Obviously square knows its customers need to search by name. Why would they make the register unable to do this basic thing?
I am new here and not sure I have done this right, but here is a link to what I believe is a "Feature Request" I have created about this. If anyone else is frustrated by this lack of basic functionality particular to the Square Register, maybe add your voice to that thread.
