Last 4 Digits of card for Tap to Pay transactions

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: "Last four digits of a card on a receipt"

Hi all

a lady came in today asking for a refund. She had her receipt. We scanned the receipt and it brought up the transaction and we refunded

she claims however the last four digits shown on her receipt (and refund receipt) aren’t one of her cards. She didn’t recognise the number.

how can this be? (She paid contactless if that makes a difference)

thanks

Hello @SCA_Fashion and welcome back to the Square Community! I'm happy to provide some information on this 🙂

I'm glad you mentioned this was a Tap to Pay transaction, because this is expected behavior for those types of payments!

One of the most significant security features of Tap to Pay is tokenization. Instead of transmitting the actual card number during a transaction, the system generates a one-time code, or "token," that represents the account information. This token is sent to the merchant, ensuring the card details remain secure.

I hope this is helpful, but please do let me know if you have any additional questions!
