Is it possible to generate Custom SKUs in Square?

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: "Custom SKUs"

Hey all - is it possible to have Square auto generate custom SKUs? Right now it will generate random SKUs (example: 3198043). I would like my SKUs to start with a certain letter code (KD). The end result being KD-3198043.
Is there anyway to do this without going through and manually editing each items SKU?

Hi @kkdonnelly212

Unfortunately not. Square has it own numbering system for auto generating SKUs.

I would love to see this as a feature request. I know every retailer has their own preferred numbering system. When we switched to Square, all our newly input items had SKUs starting with N (for New), and started at N1000, I think we ran out of numbers, so we moved on to M. 😅

Do you use a barcode scanner? KD-3198043 is a lot to type into the Square Stand. That's why we kept our numbers to four digits. Again, it goes back to every retailer having their own preferred numbering system.

@kkdonnelly212 ;

Square does not auto generate a custom prefix or suffix to a SKU right now, but if you really need that, you could export your items as an Spreadsheet file (csv or excel) and use that to edit your SKUs at once.

1st export your file

sort it by sku

remove rows that already have the KD in the front as you want.

then add a column right before the sku for a prefix and add a column after the Sku header 'New Sku'

at the top of the spread sheet put "KD-" in the cell at the top of the newly created column Header prefix

Then copy it and fill it down the column to the last sku you need to add it to.

Now in the column labeled 'New Sku' type in the first column   "=concat( F2,G2)"   Where F2 is the cell that has KD- and Cell G2 is your old SKU... In the New SKU column you should get KD-3198043.... copy the formula down the rest of the way.

then copy the New SKU column and paste it as TEXT in the old SKU column... delete columns F2 and the new SKU column

then import it back into square as an update.   to append all the new SKUs.

Here is a video on the concat function:
