How do I add the Square service charge to the bill before taking payment?

Is there a way to include "Square service charge %" to the purchase price at checkout?

This feature is actually on the Roadmap for later this year, currently, could bump to 2026

"Pass on transaction fees to customers by automatically detecting credit cards and applying a surcharge to those transactions. Built to meet all compliance and credit card network requirements."

@isabelle can this be moved to a regular question spot?

Hey there @jbcpottery.  First a quick note about posting in the Community.  You posted this on the feature requests board.  Since it is a general help question, in the future for those click on Help in the top menu bar, select the help area that best describes your issue, then start a thread there.  Anyway....

Service charges can not be automatically added to transactions right now -- only to Square Online orders.  I did a quick search of feature requests and was surprised not to find any that looked obvious to me.  So in this case, I'd recommend posting another feature request (Feedback > Feature Requests) and request this feature for POS just like we have it for Square Online.  I'll definitely support and upvote that.

This is great news! Especially since Canadian law changed making it legal to pass on those fees. While I am not sure I would, I payed over 6k in fees last year, its something to consider and I have looked into the feasability prior before deciding and making that a non starter....guess i gotta review again lol

Yeah, I don't think I will either for the foreseeable future. I hate it when I go somewhere and they want to charge me to pay them.  Next thing they are going to add fees on at the end for electric, payroll, insurance, and rent.

We paid over 20k in Square fees, but it was over 80% of my retail in credit cards.  I just don't understand wanting to put up roadblocks for the customer to pay me.  When calculating my retail prices, 5% is added for all money handling.

I would much rather let my customers see the rates I pay in their choice of payment as they go to pay, but the payment merchant here isnt about to do that lol

Merchant Payable fees:
Cash:$0.00

Debit$0.96

Credit:$1.49

That is a really interesting idea.  Not that you are passing on the fees, just showing the customer how their payment type affects the business and what they collect, and then letting them decide from there how to pay.

Something like your total is $100. If you pay by...

Cash they get $100
Credit they get $97.25

How would you like to pay?
