Trying to set up several discounts deals. 

The first is Buy 5 Main items get the 6th free

Not sure the correct way to configure it. Right now - if I load 6 items and apply discount it taking off the entire bill, but if I have 6 items itemized and highlight one it will apply to the individual item.

If I load 6 of the same item and apply it goes back to 100% off rather than the one item.

I think you're on the right path with the discounts you already have listed on your website. It's just the matter of configuring the Main discount to automatically grab what you want.

On my example, I have the buy 5 get 1 free set up for my Costa Rica. For your setup, change the items in the "Edit purchase rule" section to the ones from the Main that you want to be a part of this discount. Then, in the "Edit discount rule" section either copy the items from the purchase rule section (you'll have that ability if there are no items listed) or choose the items again. Be sure to have the 5 and 1 listed as I do in the big spaces on the left side of each part of the discount configuration.

Please note that for this discount to work on online sales you can't designate whole categories. You'll need to designate the items individually.
