Dear Team,
We want to create a combo for customer to select the dishes, it includes 2 sections:
- Meat: pork / beef / chicken / fish / crab
customer can select 3 from above 5, it can be the same one x 3;
- Side: coleslaw / fries / onion rings
customer can select 2 from above 3, it can be the same one x 2;
for example, customer can select "pork x 1, beef x 1, chicken x 1", or "pork x 2, beef x 1", or "pork x 3" for meat, and then select "coleslaw x 1, fries x 1", or "coleslaw x 2" for side.
May I know how to implement it in Square?
I have checked Modifier, but it looks not supporting duplicates (like "pork x 3"), so I'm wondering whether any other way is feasible.
Hi @Mumu. I am part of the modifier quantities beta that is currently going on. So far, there has been no word about a general release — most likely because the beta test is in its infancy. A few problems have cropped up integrating this into the Square ecosystem as a whole, and there are restrictions on being able to use it. You might be able to go to the beta here and ask to join. Just be aware that depending on your current Square feature set you might not be able to join the test right away.
Expanding on what @Getonthebus mentioned as a work-around. You COULD duplicate your modifier list 3 times (or however many choices they get. Restrict each one to one and only one choice. Then customers would have to select one from each list to complete the order. It’s clunky, but hopefully it is only temporary and the beta test is a success.
Alfred combo's and duplicate mods are both in beta as we speak. We were able to get into the beta for duplicate mods but not sure if enrollment is still live for that. I would think it would be pretty close to going "public". They do work great and I'm excited for the new enhancements to come with Square for Restaurant.
Thanks so much for sharing the news! It's an exciting enhancement.
If there is any target date of going public, could you please share that as well? we may see whether we have to use Modifier as workaround in our menus in the short term.

Hello @Mumu,
Hmmm... this is a tough one as you are allowing guests to choose the items on this. Your example above would work fine if it were just your FOH staff making those choices but I can see a customer choosing each protein x 3 - and then the kitchen screaming as they are preparing nine proteins for one meal. 😞
You could create a notes section where the guest could type in their choices. That might be the easiest while Square finishes up the beta testing of the duplicates. I know that defeats the purpose of the simple buttons for selections.
I am going to stew on this for a few to see if I can come up with a better solution for you.

Boom! Yes, that is a much easier approach to working around the problem for now. That way they can only choose one item per modifier and won't screw with the kitchen staff. You could just label each modifier option Protein #1, Protein #2 and Protein #3 to keep them seperate.
Thankfully there is now a duplicate function for modifier sets. I hope that helps you in the short-term @Mumu until the best solution rolls out. And, like I said, don’t hesitate to ask if you can join the beta test.
Thank you all @TheRealChipA @Getonthebus @AcadianPOS for jumping in here and getting @Mumu in the right direction!
