Can I assign multiple printer profiles to the same printer?

The title of this thread has been edited from the original: 1 printer, 2 profiles.

Hi everyone!

Very new to the Restaurants side of things, previously been using Square for Retail and never used a separate printer - we just needed a receipt for the customer at the end of the transaction, so we would do this from Square Terminal, and that was enough.

Now we are in a Restaurant format and want to ask questions before upgrading the outdated POS that came with the restaurant over to Square, and buying hardware.

I just want to ask if it's possible to add more than one Printer profile to one printer.

I have essentially 4 teams: Kitchen, Pizza Oven, Bar, and Coffee

The Kitchen and Bar will have their own printer, but the Coffee station the Pizza Oven are so close to each other I was hoping to only use one between them.

The concern I have is: Can I assigned that printer 2 different profiles - so that if one table orders coffees and pizzas, 2 tickets print out (one with coffees, one with pizzas)

I don't want my coffee team and pizza team to get the same printouts and have to sift through a potentially long ticket to filter which items they need to prep.

Thanks for your post, @YourMates

Yes, you can absolutely assign multiple printer profiles to the same printer. This setup is perfect for teams working in close proximity that need separate tickets.

Here’s how it would look:

Printer #1 - “Kitchen & Bar Printer”

Kitchen Printer Profile
Categories to Print: All Kitchen categories

Bar Printer Profile
Categories to Print: All Bar categories

Printer #2 - “Coffee & Pizza Oven Printer”

Coffee Printer Profile
Categories to Print: All Coffee categories

Pizza Oven Printer Profile
Categories to Print: All Pizza Oven categories

When a table orders items from different stations, the system will automatically generate separate tickets for each team based on the item categories, even when using the same physical printer. This means your coffee team and pizza team won't need to sift through lengthy tickets to find their relevant items.

Setting this up is straightforward:

Step 1: Create your Printer Profiles

Sign in to your Square Dashboard and navigate to Settings > Device management > Profiles > Printer profiles Create a profile.

Create four separate Printer Profiles:

- Kitchen Printer Profile
- Bar Printer Profile
- Coffee Printer Profile
- Pizza Oven Printer Profile

Step 2: Assign Categories to Printer Profiles

For each profile, assign only the relevant categories. That is:

- Kitchen Printer Profile: Assign only kitchen-related categories
- Bar Printer Profile: Assign only bar-related categories
- Coffee Printer Profile: Assign only coffee-related categories
- Pizza Oven Profile: Assign only pizza-related categories

Step 3: Set up Printer #1: “Kitchen and Bar Printer”

When setting up each printer, follow the connection-specific instructions in this Support Centre article based on your printer type (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth, or AirPrint), your Square application (Square Point of Sale, Square for Restaurants, etc.) and mode.

- Name Printer #1: "Kitchen and Bar Printer"
- Assign both Kitchen and Bar printer profiles to this printer

Step 4: Set up Printer #2: “Coffee and Pizza Oven Printer”

When setting up each printer, follow the connection-specific instructions in this Support Centre article based on your printer type (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, USB, Bluetooth, or AirPrint), your Square application (Square Point of Sale, Square for Restaurants, etc.) and mode.

- Name Printer #2: "Coffee and Pizza Oven Printer"
- Assign both Coffee and Pizza Oven printer profiles to this printer

With this setup, all of your Kitchen Printer Profile tickets and Bar Printer Profile tickets will print separately to Printer #1 "Kitchen & Bar Printer", while all of your Coffee Printer Profile tickets and Pizza Oven Printer Profile tickets will print separately to Printer #2 "Coffee & Pizza Oven Printer". This way, each station receives only their relevant tickets on the appropriate physical printer.

Hope this helps! Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
