we just purchased an IXR and there is no jheadphone jack for the card reader that we have for 6S .

you can get a lightning reader that will work on newer iPhones for $10.  https://squareup.com/shop/hardware/ca/en/products/magstripe-reader-ca

there isn't any monthly fee you have to worry about regardless of how you take payments with Square.
