I have my Online store inventory set up and I was able to set up a standard unit of Yards with a precision of .000, which is what you need for selling fabric by the yard. I am an online quilt shop so all I do is sell fabric by the yard. All of my inventory is successfully entered by the yard, but when my customers see my website (a square retail site) all they see is that they can purchase one, or two , or three items which would sell them one yard or two yards, etc. It does not allow them the option to purchase 1/2 Yard or 1/4 Yard, etc... which are very standard in the fabric world. I am not sure if I need to set up Options to do this? And if I do, how do you do that?
Read up on Sell by Units. Basically since you have Red Fabric and you want to sell the lowest piece by a 1/4 yard you could set Inventory by 1/4 and create your sizes and prices by 1/4, 1/2,3/4 and by the yard and this would all take from the Same Inventory. The issue is I am not sure if you have Square for Retail or if by you having Square Online counts for this feature.
I use this when I by Tappers by the Case of 144, and sell in either pack of 12 or singularly. But total Quanty received has to be Case of 144 X number of cases for the quantity of Tapers. So for 11.5 yards you would need to figure out how many 1/4 yards are in the 11.5 yards.
Sorry for the confusion I was working on my own option sets when I first replied and forgot about the sell by units conversion.
Try doing Option Sets for the under 1 yd of common amounts.
Here is How to setup Option Sets. : 6689-item-options
After the option Sets are created for 1/4, 1/2 , 3/4 and 1 yards.
Goto your Item Red Fabric for example and Choose ad Option Set. this will create Variations for each Option you created in the Option Set.
Here is an Image where you add Option sets to an Item. This image shows my Option set of Candle Sizes.
In your Square Items, for the Item Red Fabric for example if you Scroll down after creating your sizes you would click the Add button and you can choose which Sizes to add to the Item Red Fabric for example. i am not sure if there other measurements you would want but you just create them when creating the Option set.
Hope this helps
Okay this is very helpful!!! I think this almost gets me there. I have my Option set created...and for simplicity say 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 1. When I add that option set to an item that has say 11 1/2 yards of inventory right now, it is adding all of that 11 1/2 yards of inventory to the 1/4 yard option and showing all of the other options as out of stock. How do I avoid this? I want people to be able to choose whatever denominations they want 1 1/2, 2 1/4, whatever they want????

Thank you so much Keith! So very helpful...I have been struggling with this for days!
@KentuckianaCQS, it is great hear that @Candlestore was able to get this resolved for you! Thank you for all your help as usual, @Candlestore.

One last question...is there a way to bulk edit option sets? I have 500 inventory items and I hate to have to edit each of them individually if I can avoid it.
Sorry I just saw this as of right now I do not know of anyway through Square to bulk apply Option Sets to all 500 of your Items. Just applying the options of your Sizes to each of your 500 items of Fabric.
Only way I know of is doing this through a csv file of your catalog. But this could mess up your catalog if your not familiar with Spreedsheets and csv files and how Square does there sheets for catalogs.
You're correct here, Keith! Thanks for always providing great info and helpful tips!
