Using the hardware and software without the Square POS

Am I able to use the Square register and printer with the software but without using Square POS?  I have an existing company already that I use but would like to use the register still.

Can you clarify what you mean by "with the software but without using Square POS?"? You cannot use Square hardware with third party software from an existing company that you have. 

Is there any reason in particular you prefer not to use the Square POS app?
