Square register contactless Payment

A few months back there was an update on the square register that went through and it would then automatically go to contactless payment or you could select a different payment method...this feature is no longer available...is this something I need to turn on or off?

Great question, @LHelm! I also miss the Register automatically sending payments to contactless. 

 

Now we almost automatically send payments to contactless because it looks like a customer is pulling a card... and then it's cash! Then we have to cancel, they feel bad, we're embarrassed - it's a whole thing.

 

@Helen - any insight into what happened to this update or is there a way we can reactivate sending purchases directly to contactless payments?

@Helen @MayaP - thanks for looking in to this!

 

As @LHelm said: essentially when you clicked charge it would assume the customer was paying via contactless (the customer display said "insert or tap" instead of "ask to insert or tap"), but the employee screen would have every option except contactless.

 

Would love to go back to those (very) few blissful and super efficient days!

On the register when we add items to the sale in the cafe then click charge there was an update a few months back that automatically took it to the tap selection. if the customer wanted to pay cash you could change it but once charge was selected it turned it over to customer side. For a cafe with quick service it's fantastic as 90% of our transactions are contactless payments so it was great when it worked that way.

I have reached out to our Hardware Team and they confirmed on our Square Terminal there is an option to Skip Payment Type. You can skip the payment type selection screen by tapping More > Settings > Checkout > Payment types > toggle on Skip Payment Type Selection. This will default the payment method to the customer-facing Tap, Insert, or Swipe screen.

 

But it doesn't appear the register has this setting. I can see how helpful this would be and would suggest submitting this on the ideate board, our new process of tracking feature requests.
