Hi - I recently moved my ecommerce site from Shopify to Square Online/Weebly, and while there's many improvements the actual page speed is much worse.
Shoppers have very little patience for slow ecommerce shops, and will just give up on sluggish ones.
Worse, Google ranks slow sites lower in their search results - so a slow mobile site is a killer for business!
On all the 4 Square Online-hosted sites I looked at (1 being mine), Google's PageSpeed measurements consistently show awful scores (see table below). Lots of time is wasted on unused JavaScript and images that are fatter than they need to be.
I did some digging and found plenty of opportunity for Square Online to make all our sites faster, and our stores more successful...
Unused/inefficient JavaScript
Google PageSpeed tells the story here (2,910ms is 2.91 seconds for the uninitiated).
Here's Google's main recommendations - quite consistent across the 4 Square Online shops I looked at. The values in seconds (s) are potential time savings.
Score (out of 100) | Unused JS | Initial response | Inefficient images | Shop |
3 | 5.16s | 2.09s | 2.4s | https://www.thelondonteamerchant.com/ |
14 | 3.37s | 1.78s | 2.85s | https://www.homestylecharlie.com/ |
6 | 5.62s | 2.04s | https://www.pessosices.com/ | |
5 | 3.03s | 2.01s | 0.3s | https://www.lahosky.com/ |
Also looking in the Chrome console I found many JavaScript load timeouts (e.g. below) on the home page. Are these just wasting more time/bandwidth after the initial load?
Inefficient image serving
I've already covered the need to serve smaller images in this post.
Short version is while Square Online uses the modern 'WebP' format sometimes, it's not everywhere. And it's wasting time serving the same images 3x over on the same page.
@londontea , @HC_Charlie , @pessosices - thanks for sharing your sites in other posts so I could do this comparison.

Hi everyone! I Just stepping in for Helen here.
I've shared this post with our ECOM team and from chatting with them, improving Square Online site performance is something that's very much top of mind for the team. There have been a lot of work in the background to improve some of the things raised in this post. I will try my best to highlight them!
There are still a lot more to be done and the team are continuing to tackle this work, so I'll be sure to follow up again when I have more to share! The team are definitely looking at reducing the size of JavaScript on published site, continuing to improve the loading speed and more.
I have and IPhone 11 and I have the same issues on my wife’s IPhone x
thx Charlie
Hi, have you in had any feedback from the tech team? The issue is still a major concern 😞
Thanks, Charlie
Apology this is taking a while @notso! The engineering team are currently working on a fix and testing it before they roll it out. Once I have a confirmation that the fix is released, I'll follow up on thread with an update.
Thank you 🤞
Hi @notso @Jsta, I just want to follow up and let you know that the issue with item description disappearing should be resolved. I've tested it just now and I can see the descriptions even after refreshing the site and adding items.
If you can check this on your end as well, that'd be much appreciated! if you're still seeing the same issue, please make sure to clear your cache & cookies first before trying again.
Do let me know if you see any further issue and I will check in with our team.
Great!!! Thank you!! I can confirm the issue has been resolved my end 🙂
Great! After checking on iOS 15.1, I can confirm that all descriptions display correctly. I am glad this issue has been resolved, thank you very much.👍🏼
Hi @Jsta
Just stepping in for Tra here. We appreciate your patience while our team worked on this issue.
Thanks for confirming everything is working as intended again!
Please see image attached.
I am having a ‘whoops’ image come up when trying to place orders on my site.
Can you please send to tech asap, im starting to find these glitches over frustrating 😞
Thank you for flagging this @notso! I checked the website on my laptop with Chrome and Safari, as well as on my iPhone with the same browsers, and it is loading without any error message. Are you still seeing the same "Whoops" message coming up?
Yeah, I've been having these issues with my site too... could somebody please look into why my website takes 15.8 seconds to load on mobile?? Definitely considering starting over with a quicker provider.
Hi @johnxkeefe, can you share a link to your website with me so I can take a look?
Hi, i have the same problem. For example when I switch from Basics/Hoodies section to Basics/Sweatshirts section, the loading time is very slow.
Sure, thanks for getting back to me on such short notice.

I know there are a bunch of images, but I tried my best to mitigate the problems by sending all my images through a compressor before inserting them into my website. Let me know if anything sticks out to you that I should try so I can ideally cut my mobile time from 16 seconds to under 5.
Thanks for sharing the site @JSB @johnxkeefe! I'm not able to fully reproduce this on my mobile but I've shared the sites with our ECOM specialist team to see if they spot anything or have any additional advice as well.
What do you mean not able to reproduce? I'm obviously looking for a better answer than that from you guys if you want me to stay as a customer. My homepage taking over a quarter-minute to load is wholly unacceptable and just like others have reported, it is all Square's fault. My webpage speed testers tell me "third party code blocked the main thread for NEARLY 5 SECONDS ALONE!! How!!!! How could my website ever stand a chance against others if your stupid fricken code blocks anything from happening for 5 whole seconds before my site can even start loading?? Not to mention "Unused JS code" blocking the thread for 3 seconds. Given the fact that I never put any Javascript into my website, I'm gonna lay that one on your shoulders as well. Go ahead and fix this **bleep** for me before you lose another customer.
Having the exact same issue here. I've got a an ecom store with about 80 products on it. And the load time is ridiculous.
I've noticed my website will load slightly quicker on a desktop with ethernet. However on a mobile devices it loads slower. Average load speed 0.28 sec. Potential reason: Unminified JavaScript and CSS files. Hopefully it will be resolve soon.
I'm struggling with site speed as well, also SEO key words. I can't find anywhere to put in my key words. Next thing to work out on my list. The only way people are finding my website is though my social media platforms.
Love everything else about it though.
Hi @tamsinchatfield, thanks for your post and welcome to the Seller Community.
Definitely check out Tra's tips above with regards to site speed and also double check your images are JPGs or JPEGs. If they are PNG files they tend to have a higher resolution and are larger files which can cause slower load times.
With regards to SEOs, It can take a number of weeks for new Square Online sites to be indexed and unindexed in search engine listings, and even longer for a site to show up in the results for specific keywords. Check out our Ultimate SEO Guide, which walks you through the ins and outs of getting indexed in search engines and improving your search ranking. 🙂
The speeds are tremendously slow and half the time i cant even edit items and categories in my square site/ecomm build this is atrocious.
