Serious Concerns Regarding Square’s Website Subscription 206.25% Price Increase

I am extremely disappointed and frustrated by Square’s upcoming subscription changes. I currently pay $192 per year for my website plan, but I am being forced off that plan and switched to a $49-per-month subscription, increasing my annual cost to $588. This represents a 206.25% price increase, or an additional $396 per year.

How can Square justify such a dramatic increase, particularly for small business owners who operate independently? I am a one-person business with no employees. I do not need an expensive, feature-heavy subscription. I simply need a functional website and the ability to connect my own custom domain.

Having a custom domain is not a luxury for a small business. It is an essential part of establishing credibility, improving online discoverability, and helping potential customers find my business. Requiring me to pay nearly three times my current annual rate to maintain this basic functionality is unreasonable and places an unnecessary financial burden on independent business owners.

Square has built its reputation around providing accessible tools for small businesses. However, this decision makes the platform significantly less affordable for the very people it is supposed to serve. Not every business has employees, substantial revenue, or the budget to absorb an unexpected $396 annual increase for the same essential functionality.

This is not simply a price adjustment; it is a substantial increase that could force small business owners to leave a platform they have relied on to operate their businesses.

I strongly urge Square’s leadership to reconsider this decision and provide an affordable plan that allows existing customers to maintain their websites and custom domains without being forced into a significantly more expensive subscription.

Why should loyal customers be penalized with such a steep increase just to retain a basic feature that is essential to running a business online? Small business owners deserve affordable, practical solutions - not pricing changes that make maintaining an online presence unnecessarily expensive.

I hope Square will reconsider the impact of this decision on independent business owners and offer a reasonable alternative before losing customers who can no longer justify the cost.

I would appreciate a clear explanation of why this change is being implemented and what affordable options will remain available for customers like me.

Hi there! Fellow independent business owner and Square Champion here! ❤️

I completely understand your frustration, and I think you’ve raised some extremely valid concerns.

Going from $192 annually to $588 annually is a significant financial burden, especially when you’re not asking for additional features. You simply want to maintain the website and custom domain you’ve already been using.

As an independent hairstylist who relies on Square to operate my business, I understand that every dollar matters. We don’t all have employees, large profit margins, or the ability to absorb hundreds of dollars in additional subscription costs.

What concerns me most is the apparent lack of flexibility for existing sellers who only need basic functionality.

I understand that software evolves and pricing structures change, but adding more features doesn’t necessarily add more value when those features aren’t something a business needs or uses.

I’d love to see Square consider a few alternatives:

  • Grandfathering existing sellers into their current website plans.
  • Offering an affordable website-only subscription.
  • Allowing custom domain connections without requiring a significantly more expensive package.
  • Providing transparent explanations and reasonable transition options when major pricing changes occur.

Square has built a strong reputation around helping small businesses succeed, and I genuinely believe maintaining affordability should remain part of that mission.

Small businesses shouldn’t have to choose between maintaining their professional online presence and paying for features they never asked for.

I’d really like to see someone from Square address this feedback directly and clarify whether any affordable alternatives are being considered.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed breakdown. These conversations matter, and I hope Square’s leadership is listening.

Being a Square Champion means celebrating what Square does well, but it also means advocating for sellers when something needs improvement. ❤️

HI @MT_LMT

Sorry to hear about the increased costs of the website .  Do you sell things using your Square website or is it more of a blog/landing page type website?  As integrations and costs increase so doesn't everything else.  I can't tell you exactly why the price of their subscriptions increased as I don't work for Square.

I used to use Wordpress, for the better part of 7 years or so.  I believe websites should be fast, with minimal loading times no page jumps or redirects.  I didn't choose a host who had used the most marketing to get me on one of their "shared tier plans" where speed was compromised, I chose one based on the numbers. I had plugins that I had to purchase on a yearly basis to renew the license to help with Cache, Speed and even overall customization of the website.  I had the cost of the domain per year (approx $30 a year) as well. It became part of my daily routine to check my website, make sure everything was up and running as it should.  If there was a problem, I had to put on my IT hat, Google the issue and try to fix it ASAP.  While I truly loved the website I built , it was lacking one big thing, the Automotive parts and accessories integration that I tried for years to incorporate.  With the data for those always changing, new parts coming in, old parts not being made inventory fluctuating from my distributors daily and not being able to have a solid data feed was not reliable or even possible.  So for which was essentially a fast contact us landing page, I was paying about $80/month

Years of trying to incorporate this I came across a company that had all of this done and ready to go for you.  The issue was they had limited customization from the blackened,  speed was okay and I was hosted by them but still need to maintain my own domain, but the main goal was and always will be the parts integration.  They offer 2 plans.  $100 a month and $300 a month. Both options were the same as far as the data, web customization etc.  The only difference is (and its a big one) is the higher end one comes with a vehicle Year, Make and Model search which is pretty crucial if you are looking to sell auto parts for someones vehicle and wanting them to have a good experience.  I'm hear to tell you that I currently only use their $100/month option currently for the sole reason that I too am just one person.  I don't have the time to try and market the sales of those right now being a single owner business.  However the data is still there, the products are still there and it does free up my time to be able to focus on the other aspects of the company that bring in the money.

I know its a long separation read and although I am a Square Champion, it doesn't mean I wouldn't call out Square when I believe that something isn't correct or unjustified  but I wanted to share my experience with websites for over my 10 years of a  being a business owner as well that will possibly help show the costs of a website from my perspective.

That’s an outrageous price increase, especially for loyal customers. Square should reconsider these changes and offer more affordable subscription plans.

Curious on what you would consider to be a more affordable price @AnayaLodhi
