I’m seeing an issue where customers can add more units to their order than what is actually in stock. The product page allows quantities above the available inventory, and the system doesn’t flag the problem until the customer reaches the cart. When the error does appear, it isn’t clear which item needs to be adjusted, and it multiple items are flagged even though only one product exceeds the available quantity.
Everything on my end is saved correctly, so I’m unsure why the quantity selector isn’t respecting inventory limits or why the error messaging is inconsistent. I’d appreciate help understanding what’s causing this and how to correct it.
Hi there, @nurturing_acres,
I completely understand how confusing and frustrating this experience can be, especially when your inventory is set correctly and the product page doesn’t immediately reflect those limits. At this time, this is expected behavior within the platform. The quantity selector on the product page does not dynamically cap based on live inventory levels, and validation occurs later in the checkout flow. When inventory limits are exceeded, the system flags the cart rather than the specific product page, which can sometimes make the messaging feel unclear or broader than expected. I realize this isn’t ideal from a customer experience standpoint, and I truly appreciate you taking the time to call it out. Your feedback is valuable, and I’m happy to share it with our product team.
@Ellie_ To demonstrate the second part of this issue relating to error messages, here is a screenshot from a friends shop where I've added more than available quantity of four items.
The duplicated alerts at the top only refer to one product, instead of all four.
Once I reduce the quantity of the specified product the alerts stay there - if I was a customer I'd think I'm alright to continue. I click "Continue to payment" but then the duplicated alerts update to tell me about another product that exceeds inventory.
For shops where people buy multiple products at a time, not seeing available quantity on the product page causes customer disappointment once they reach the cart. The cart being do cumbersome in clarifying the quantity available is a further disappointment. It is causing customers to abandon carts.
Up until a few months ago the quantity selector on product pages didn't allow people to select more than the stock available. It worked well and customers were able to shop easily.
