Product Links in Online store

Why are the links to products in the online store so long?  Is there a way to cusomize with the website url and product name.  See below, (e.g. why all the true false, etc?)

Hey @TrekVitality,

You can edit the item title part of the URL.

Go to Items Item Library and then scroll down to the SEO section an enter something into the permalink field.

Whatever you put there will get put in place of the item title in the URL.

How about in Classic Weebly editor?  It doesn't work. I entered permalinks for all category and product pages before my website migration to site and none of them work.  404 error return on every single one. Also can't do 301 redirects to product pages(only standard pages) so losing all my google traction

Is there a way to edit a product's url so it doesn't have this as the link:

https://www.richmondbeasties.com/product/rva-richmond-pint-glass/2490?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=fa...

I went to the permalink and manually changed it to /rva-richmond-pint-glass, but it still adds all this extra junk to the end of the url.

I was hoping when on a product for a customer it would just look like:

https:///www.richmondbeasties.com/product/rva-richmond-pint-glass

I am hoping it's just a setting I can toggle, I have hundreds of products on the site and it looks weird when I post the link to have all this extra url baggages. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey @BeastiesRVA!

Welcome to the Seller Community 🎉

Is this for an item checkout link? Or the URL for your Square Online Store when you select an item?

Hi Isabelle!

It's the URL for Square Online Store when you select an item. So if you are shopping on the site and then click a product, it's the url listed.

It defaults to:

https://www.richmondbeasties.com/product/rva-richmond-pint-glass/2490?cp=true&sa=true&sbp=false&q=fa...

Rather than the link that I'd prefer:

https://www.richmondbeasties.com/product/rva-richmond-pint-glass

I appreciate your help!

Hey @BeastiesRVA!

Stepping in for @isabelle here.

I moved your post to an existing thread where another seller had the same question.

I detailed above where you can edit these URLs. 👍

I read through that thread, it doesn't work.

I changed it from "cactus-oven-mitt-set" to "cactus" for example in that section, and it still adds all that garbage to the end. So now the new URL is: https://www.richmondbeasties.com/product/cactus/2019?cp=true&sa=false&sbp=false&q=true

Any suggestions? Editing the permalink doesn't do anything to prevent the extra url pieces being added to the end.

I'm wondering the same thing! The permalink doesn't work for me at all, actually.  I added something to the permalink field in the item details, saved, then tested it by going the URL/permalinkname and it didn't work.

ETA: I should say, it gives me a 404 error.

It doesn't seem like the permalink field actually does anything?

They did. They all did. Why is this not fixed 4 years later?

I also cannot get the permalink to work. I need it for google advertising, and I cannot move forward without setting it up...

Is a product or page? Did you find the section and it won't accept?

Same issue here. Changing the URL does not remove the need to have the product id number on the URL. The base URL requires /product-name/555, for example. This makes it nearly impossible to write any redirect or anything else.

I'm also having this issue. The permalink is not going to the item, just a 404 page. It's frustrating that people were complaining about this, trying the steps outlined in Ash's answer, and still being told to try her steps... and 4 years later it's still an issue. This should have been solved by now. But then again, they would have fixed the shipping mess by now too. Sigh.

I may have to just give up cross linking items with the same design.

Hey @Brooklyne,

The link length can vary depending on whether someone is going directly to an item or navigating through the shop-all page.

Currently, customizing item URLs isn't a feature we offer. You could consider submitting this as a feature request in our Ideate Room for our product team to review.

In the meantime, there are third-party services like TinyURL that can help shorten the URLs, which might meet your needs.

Let me know if you have any other questions or if there's anything else I can assist with!

So, not your circus, not your monkeys? Got it. It's been over 4 years since this issue was first addressed. You'd think they'd have fixed it by now instead of offering silly work arounds that take time to do correctly. Silly, because most customers are savvy and won't click on a tiny url because of scams and phishing issues. And good on them for understanding that and protecting themselves. And shame on you for suggesting such a thing. Literally no one can build rapport with tiny urls.

BTW there ARE permalinks. It's the shop url/product/item-name/order in which it was listed. So shop url/product/item-name/3 or shop url/product/item-name/457. That number indicates when you posted it. Google uses this permalink to link the item in search results. You can find this permalink in the SEO section of the Item Library page, NOT the Site Items page.

Should I be writing KB articles for y'all? I swear I'm nicer to people who don't purposely waste my time and make me do their job for them. You're paid. I'm not.
