Online Shipping rates for different items

How can I set up automatic discounts on shipping for buying multiple of the same item. For example:

Item 1 costs $3 to ship but if there are 2 purchased I can package together and only charge $5

Item 2 costs $9 to ship but if there are 2 purchased I can package together and only charge $12

 

I can only find option to do discount by the number of items if i leave it set to default (all items). When I choose specific items its either strictly per item or per order. I just do not want to charge full shipping if multiple of the same item is purchased together!

It's not possible to setup an automatic discount like this at this time. It may be something that is available once we merge Square Discounts to the online store, however I do not know for sure. I can try to reach out to the team to confirm if this will be an option, though. 

 

How do you have your shipping rules setup? Can you post a link to your website so we can take a look?

I have the standard rate for our tshirts, then a separate rule for our tic tac toe games, and another separate rule for our board games. But if i were to ship two of the same game to the same person, i would not need to charge double the shipping rate.

 

any advice is appreciated!

Hey there! Thanks for the reply. Super sorry for my delay here, I was out of office this past week. 

 

It's going to be a bit tricky to manually calculate your shipping rules based on the type of items you are selling. Do you have any previous online sales to gauge your average order, or typical order you would receive? 

 

At first glance it seems that the best course of action would be to set your custom shipping profile for board games to per order instead of per item. This would eliminate the scenario where the checkout page would charge double if someone ordered two games. However, if someone were to order 5 games, for example, would that be too much of a hit from your end? 

 

Another thought- have you considered setting your shipping rules as a weight tier? You would need to edit all of your items to make sure there is a weight assigned to each item so that the total weight of the shopping cart is calculated properly. 

 

I'm going to keep fiddling with different settings in my test account to see if there's any other suggestion or work-arounds I can suggest. I'm also going to check in with the team to see if we have any information on what the next coupon upgrade will look like. I'm not sure if it will include the ability to offer a shipping discount like you first mentioned in your original post, but I will let you know as soon as I have more details to share. 😊
