Is there a way to reflect retail value vs your price for marketing on your website

Is it possible to display a retail value price with a line through it next to the product price on Square? I've noticed this feature on other websites, and I think it would be a useful marketing tool. Right now, I don't see that option available on Square, and it's one of many features that I feel are missing. The only workaround I can think of is adding the retail value in parentheses next to the item title, but I worry that it might look tacky.

Hey @annawalton59.  If I’m understanding your question correctly, there is, sort of.  It involves adding an online sale price to your items.  When you do this, the original price has a strike-through and the online sale price is displayed next to that.

I mean I guess but I feel like that would more so imply that all of my items are on sale. I make gift baskets so I wanted to show the variance in what I'm charging vs how much more it would cost them retail for each basket.

That wouldn't be a bad alternative if you could change the title. Like where it said "sale price" I could change it to "retail value" otherwise as I stated it would look like everything is on sale lol.

Understood. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to do what you are asking.  It’s sale price or nothing.  If you are so inclined, you can head over to the Ideate Board and submit a feature request to the Online team.  They’ll review it and make a decision, but this is not a short-term solution, of course.  And I can’t think of a work-around.

For my own enlightenment, can you be more detailed about this “retail value” thing?  What are you selling/offering?  What is the purpose of this marketing/retail value?  I’m honestly at a loss trying to envision what you are asking about here.

When I buy items for my gift baskets in bulk from a wholesale company, the cost per item is cheaper. For example, if I buy a case of 8 soups for $35.60, the cost per soup in my basket is $4.45. If the customer were to buy the same soup individually in a store, it would cost them $8.99. This is because retail prices in stores like Walmart are more expensive, making the cost higher for each item.

I would like to have a way on the website to show that the basket through me costs $30.00, as I get the items wholesale in bulk. If the customer were to buy everything individually from a store at retail prices, it would cost them around $50. This will help me demonstrate to the customer that it's more cost-effective for me to get the items and create the basket for them, as I purchase the items at a lower wholesale price and provide the service of assembling the basket, making it a convenient and economical choice for them.

@annawalton59 Thank you!  That was a perfect explanation, and now I completely understand.  Unfortunately, this is not something you’ll be able to easily do through Square at this time.  So the Ideate Board is your best bet to see if you can convince Square to add this to a future product roadmap.

One other suggestion.  If you can come up with a few search terms, you might want to check out the Square App Marketplace.  There you’ll find a collection of apps made by third-party developers that integrate their products with our Square accounts.  You might be able to find a reselling app, or co-op app, or some alternative online store that would do exactly what you are looking for.  I wouldn’t know where to begin to search for what you do, but I’ll be you know a few keywords that would help you look.

Good luck.

Not the best example but here in this photo, they put it in parenthese (which I will likely do) but you can have your price vs the retail price. I won't say anything to the team for consideration b/c, from what I hear on other suggestions, it hardly goes anywhere. I heard people suggested four years ago people asked for not being able to display their address for the business location since some people are home based and that still hasn't been changed. That there is a security thing in general b/c if your a home business you don't want people showing up at your door. I'm no website editor but I can't image some of these things would be too incredibly difficult to add I could be wrong. I plan to move away from this at some point bc it is missing lots of BASIC key features that I feel are so basic they should already be there and other companies that cost the same have those things. I'm just on Square b/c it was easier to use for customers compared to Wix. At some point I'll pay a local professional. Even with Square's support, they appear to lack care or knowledge. I understand that they are doing their best and just performing their job, but I believe that if you work for a company that focuses on business-minded people, the support staff should be familiar with business terms in order to troubleshoot customers' needs. I recently asked for help with an invoice, and the support staff seemed to be unfamiliar with what that even was. With 14 years of experience in the food service industry, it feels like someone asking me how to bake and me not knowing basic measurements like how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon.

Screenshot 2024-08-24 150400.pngThe photo shows an example in which the price and the retail price are put in parentheses (which I will likely do). I won't bring it up with the team for consideration because based on what I've heard about other suggestions, it seems unlikely to go anywhere. I've heard that four years ago, people requested the ability to not display their business address if they are home-based, and that still hasn't been changed. This is a security concern because home-based businesses don't want people showing up at their door. I'm not a website editor, but I can't imagine that some of these things would be too difficult to add, although I could be wrong. I'm considering moving away from this because it's missing many basic key features that I believe should already be there, and other companies that cost the same have those features. I'm only using Square because it's easier for customers compared to Wix. At some point, I'll hire a local professional.

Actually the ability to hide addresses has been around for quite a while.  Addresses and the map can be easily toggled off and on all Square online store sites, etc.  So whatever you are reading that it isn’t done is either very old, or is just the result of people not seeing the options to hide store name, address, phone, email address, etc, etc.  So I want to correct that misstatement so that future visitors to this post don’t get the wrong idea.

Otherwise, I’ve never had a problem suggesting things and seeing them come to fruition eventually.  Like all big companies, Square has to prioritize what they spend time and money on, and they can’t be everything to everyone.  Of course, I’m more patient than most and don’t expect everything immediately, or even quickly.  But I would not say that it is fair to say that suggestions are unlikely to go anywhere.

I’ll leave it there.  I tried to give you options about what you could do, and obviously those aren’t acceptable to you.  I hope you find satisfaction and that perfect company somewhere.  I’m unsubscribing to this thread, now, and won’t be replying to any further posts on it.

Under Account settings>Pickup and Delivery> Edit location> Location details. This is what I was talking about as far as hiding your address (there's no option to hide it ) in the address line I had to put that text that you see below to override it. Whenever I tried to leave the address line blank and just put the city and state it would say something along the lines of " I have to put a street address" it wouldn't let me skip it. I found this workaround on another forum. This was a few months ago. Because when customers would order and go to check out my full home address was on display. Now when they go to the cart only my city and state is showing and that text that I put there.

Here's the link to that original thread about this:

Also that would involve extra mathematical work and work in general cause I'd have to figure out the difference between my product and retail cost to make sure the math is matching. Like if my product is $30 and if they bought it retail it would cost them $50 then I'd have to put a sale price , which I'm not trying to have a "sale" it wouldn't make sense that way. They are technically saving $20 getting it through me, but that's not what I'm trying to reflect.
